Kampeerverblijf De Donderheide is in peaceful and green Flanders surroundings, so there are lots of options around for bike and walking trails – but it’s also handily placed between Brussels and Antwerp (about 40 minutes’ drive from either) so you can throw city strolls into the mix too.
All of this means you can tailor your break as you please, picking and choosing as you go – will it be fishing, kayaking or lake swimming nearby, or setting off for museums and major attractions in the big city? Lier (10 minutes’ drive) and Mechelen (20 minutes) are also nearby for urban wanders and amenities like shops – and the music fans among you may also like to know that the Tomorrowland festival site is only about 20 minutes away by car.
Whatever you choose to do with your days, here you’ll be staying at a small and cosy site where you’ll share space with resident animals including goats, chickens, cats and a very friendly dog. You might spot wilder visitors too, as things like squirrels, deer, frogs and hedgehogs sometimes put in an appearance on site.
There’s a very friendly atmosphere on site, with guests encouraged to socialise at the communal area (with covered lounge seats, picnic tables and a campfire area with pretty lighting) and borrow various outdoor games. There’s also a decent-sized playground, a large trampoline (with a safety net) and a small above-ground pool (2 x 4 metres) where kids can cool off on warm days.
A supermarket is about five minutes’ drive away for any picnic/barbecue supplies you may need; fresh bread and other breakfast bits can be ordered on site for morning deliveries.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden
If you’re in the mood for outdoor activities, you can start by taking a short bike ride or walk (five minutes/20 minutes respectively) to 'T Fort Koningshooikt, for some fishing or an Airsoft adventure. For something a little gentler, there’s a beach and swimming pond at De Nekker recreation centre (15 minutes’ drive) or boating, kayaking and paddleboarding on the Binnen-Nete in Lier (10 minutes).
The lovely city of Antwerp (40 minutes) is well worth a visit, to visit the zoo, explore the Rubens House and perhaps sample a local beer or two. The ornate facades of Brussels’ Grand Place and Royal Palace are about 40 minutes away as well.
Closer to home, Mechelen (20 minutes) has a zoo, the Technopolis science museum and a good collection of interesting buildings, including colourful houses and a cathedral where you can climb the tower for excellent views.
