Then Murchison Farm's Primitive Campground is probably not the place for you – as the name suggests, this is frill-free wild camping in all its glory. Part of a family-run tree farm and wildlife preserve, pitches here are among open land, young timber, ancient hardwood and fishing ponds, and require a bit of effort on the part of the guests.
There are 263 acres of pure nature to pick from at this Alabama site, and you’ll need to do a bit of prep to clear out your own pitch (it’s worth reading up on what you’ll need to do before coming along, and bringing a simple cutting tool like a machete or axe to help with turning your chosen spot into a truly excellent place to camp out). Campfires are welcome, of course, and you can buy bundles of kindling on site to help with that.
Other than the odd check-in to make sure all is well, the owners usually leave guests to their own devices, so you’ll be assured of plenty of peace and personal space to spend your break as you wish. Go fishing, go hiking, swim or wade in the creek, hire a boat on site (for a small extra charge; experienced boaters only please) or stroll around the area looking at all the wildflowers, grasses and fruit trees – and see what wildlife you can spot along the way too. And don’t forget to look up after dark: out here the stars are quite something…

Golfers had better pack their clubs in among all the wild camping gear, as several of Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail courses are within an easy drive of Murchison Farm. If you’d rather get your exercise on a hike, try the trails of Frank Jackson State Park (an hour and a quarter’s drive), Conecuh National Forest (an hour and 20 minutes) or Blackwater River State Forest (an hour and 45 minutes).
Head south for a couple of hours’ drive and you’ll hit the Florida coastline for days at the likes of Fort Walton Beach and Miramar Beach. You could also stop in Pensacola for the National Naval Aviation Museum and The Gulf Breeze Zoo.
It’s worth making your way to Montgomery (an hour) during your trip too: the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement is full of places to find out more about this part of American history – the Rosa Parks Museum, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Dexter Parsonage Museum (Dr Martin Luther King’s home) should all be on the schedule.
