Surf’s up in Portugal with a stay at A Terra, on the edges of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park – but so is relaxing next to a big freshwater lake and exploring the woodland, fruit orchards and grasslands surrounding this family-friendly glamping site.
Set on a small farm in a secluded valley, the eco-friendly park aims to get guests taking time off from technology. In fact, a stay here’s often all about slowing things down with time spent chilling out in the serene gardens, cooling off in the lake and sampling homemade local produce for breakfast in the restaurant.
Another focus is on encouraging human connection, so group drinks, barbecues and weekend events are often put on to get you mixing with the other travellers. A volleyball pitch is on site for group games too, and yoga classes are held twice a week. Horse-riding lessons are organised for those that would like to take a trot through the spectacular countryside.
Planning on making your own meals? There’s a barbecue area and woodfired pizza oven with a sink and food prep space to help make cooking easy-breezy. Dine in the spacious living area or head out on the lawn and eat alfresco – the on-site bar’s a swish space for chasing your grub with an alcoholic drink, acai juice or smoothie later on.
If the sprogs are searching for stuff to do, send them off to the swings, slides and hanging chairs in the playground or schedule in a visit to the park’s ‘Open Farm’ where they can stroke and feed the animals as well as help pick the fruit and vegetables.

Stop off at beaches on the Alentejo and Vicentina coast for some surfing – board rental and lessons are available at Odeceixe (20 minutes’ drive) – then kayak on the Mira and Odeceixe rivers before trying traditional Portuguese cuisine in towns like São Teotónio (just over five minutes’ drive) and Zambujeira (20 minutes).
A low-key break’s also going to mean lots of leisurely trips on foot or by bike, and strolls or cycle rides are to be had on the Rota Vicentina, which passes close by the site and follows the coast for around 400 kilometres.
If you do choose to set off on the trails here, look forward to setting eyes on a selection of scenery, from craggy cliffs to sprawling fields.
