Just how many national walking and cycling trails might you get your hiking boots or trusty wheels along from Luxembourg's Camping Du Nord? Whatever amount you plump for, it's a fairly sure be you won't get around them all, for 20 – yep, 20 – paths await you around this green and riverside site in the Sûre valley of the Luxembourg Ardennes.
Guests have been arriving here since 1967 to take to the treks and rides of all these trails, several of which start directly from the site or very close by. If you'd rather motor along the region instead, driving and motorcycling routes are also within your grasp, including the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club ADAC route which passes the park entrance. And if you'd rather be watery? Zip along to the diving and boating of the Esch-sur-Sûre reservoir, within 15 minutes' drive.
Camping Du Nord is a spectacularly scenic park (see pics), set on the river less than a kilometre from the village of Goebelsmuhle and about 10 minutes' drive from the town of Dirbach in the canton of Diekirch. It's especially well set up for canny anglers, as casting-off spots along the river run the entire length of the site for fisherfolk to land trout, pike, perch, eel and carp among other specimens.
For kids, there's a play area with big sandbox; a waterslide, and a TV room if they clamour to goggle the box for an hour or two. A wifi service is available too.
Guests can order bread at reception to pick up the next morning.

Camp du Nord is surrounded by 20 national walking and cycling trails stretching between 15 and 68 kilometres, including the National Cycle Route 16 (Pistes Cyclables) and the famed Escapardenne Eislek Trail – a 104-kilometre hiking path between Kautenbach and La Roche-en-Ardenne. Both run directly from the site.
To tackle more fishing, or to go diving, boating, canoeing or swimming, drive to the popular Esch-sur-Sûre reservoir about 15 minutes from the site, part of the spectacular Upper Sûre Nature Park. Motorboating is banned here, so you're sure of serene surroundings for your watery sports, or to amble or pedal along the several lakeside trails.
Around a kilometre from the lake is the small town of Esch-sur-Sûre and its 10th-century castle; more medieval castle ruins are at Bourscheid, 10 minutes' drive away, and at Vianden, within half an hour. Sightseers must also have a day in Luxembourg City, to see its famed Notre Dame cathedral, the underground art gallery of the AM Tunnel, Neumünster Abbey and the NMHA or National Museum of History and Art.
If you'd like to leave the car behind, reach Dirbach by bus in about 30 minutes and from there travel on a couple of hours south then east to get to Vianden.
