Fancy snuggling up in a secluded shepherd’s hut in the Lake District for a little while, in one of those excellent locations that feels completely removed from busy urban life but is actually conveniently located for town time when you need/want it? Sneak away to Snittlegarth, where a single shepherd’s hut is set in a peaceful patch of woodland on a quiet Cumbria farm.
This location is in the very northern part of the Lake District National Park, about 10 minutes’ drive north of Bassenthwaite and around 20 minutes from Keswick. It’s a particularly fine base for hikers, with Skiddaw about 20 minutes away and several wainwrights within easy reach. Don’t worry if that all sounds overly intrepid – there are plenty of more low-key outings around as well, including gentle lakeside strolls and visits to places like Honister Slate Mine and the Lake District Wildlife Park.
Even with all this on offer nearby, you may well decide simply to stick around on site, put your feet up and look out for the wildlife that’s all around – red squirrels being a highlight for many guests. Outdoor furniture and a firepit are provided to keep you comfortable while you’re wildlife-spotting (or just having an alfresco glass of wine…).
Inside the hut, it’s a cosy space that’s been cleverly designed to house a kingsize bed, an ensuite shower room and a mini kitchen with cooker, fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster. Heating is included and there’s also a TV for those evenings when you’d like to flop out after a long walk.

Attractions à proximité
Bring your best hiking boots along, because there are loads of great trails to try out around here. Adventurous sorts can scale Skiddaw (20 minutes’ drive) or Blencathra (half an hour) or look out for some of the less well known wainwrights and fells like Binsey (10 minutes) or Longlands Fell (15 minutes).
For something a little easier, take a walk on the Threlkeld Railway Path (25 minutes), wander by a lake – perhaps Bassenthwaite (10 minutes) or Derwentwater (25 minutes) – or check out Aira Force waterfall (40 minutes), by the banks of Ullswater.
Fancy dipping into the area’s history too? Head to Honister Slate Mine (45 minutes) or Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum (half an hour) or meander around the grounds of Mirehouse & Gardens (15 minutes). Lake District Wildlife Park (10 minutes) is a nice place to see some exotic beasts, and Keswick (20 minutes) has some fun attractions in the Derwent Pencil Museum, Puzzling Place and Theatre by the Lake.
