Hello Nigel, we're pleased you enjoyed our idyllic setting. You are right, many years ago the Great Lake was managed and used for fishing competitions so the varietey of species was much wider however today, as our receptionists inform all prospective fisherman, this is no longer the case. Nature conservation is something the Castle Howard Estate cares dearly about and consequently over time the focus of provision (and expenditure) needs to be carefully considered. Our website does state that fishing is an ancillary offering now.

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. Our FAQ's do state that there is no wi-fi at Lakeside and whilst it is a problem for some, for others it is a welcome break from the technological reliance of everyday life but we understand this doesn't suit everyone. There is free wi-fi at Castle Howard itself.

hanks for your review though I have to admit to being puzzled. We are not on a private road and our site code of conduct explains that open fires are not allowed. (Bareques and fire pits are fine if raised off the ground.) Our large field, which is unallocated, has plenty of space for everyone, even when our pitch limit is reached, providing our guests place themselves wisely so I do wonder if you have mixed us up with another site?

Hello Hannah, thank you for your review. It's good to read that you liked the area and found the facilities clean.
Regarding pitching, many guests enjoy the fact that our camping field is unallocated so that they can pitch up with their family and friends, however we understand that this relies on guests being considerate of others, especially in August, our busiest month of the year. We can only apologise that, on this occasion, it sounds as if that consideration was lacking. The field has ample space for everyone even when we are fully booked but I will pass your comments on to the relevant team. We hope that you may consider revisiting Lakeside again at a different time of the year.

Hello Tracey. We're pleased to read that you enjoyed the peace and quiet at Lakeside and happy to see you would return. Regarding the other points you've made; if you return and find that you are on a pitch you don't like please pop in to reception and they will do their best to move you and answer any questions you have. There were some tree-less pitches availalbe at the time of your stay. Our receptionists normally explain that you cannot walk all the way around the lake as part of the walk is within the grounds of Castle Howard which you need a ticket to enter, but they can tell you about the best paths, including circular routes, in the area to go walking on. We have maps and leaflets available for our visitors in reception. Last year a path was constructed to keep our guests away from traffic whilst walking up to Castle Howard itself. In the courtyard at Castle Howard there are various outlets that visitors and passers-by can use, parking is free; the courtyard is just over a mile and takes around 30 minutes to walk. We hope you will return one day to experience some of the beautiful wider countryside walks on the estate.

Hopefully on your early morning walk to the facilities you were blessed with a cloudless, moonlit sky. As a dark skies area, with good weather, the stars can 'pop' ! We would however still recommend a torch to light the ground to ensure you didn't stumble over a tripping hazard. Do come back.
