Camping Scheldeoord

This peaceful southern slice of Zeeland has a landscape of beaches, orchards and pretty polders (that's fields reclaimed from the sea, in case you didn't know). It's also pretty flat, which makes it a breeze to get out and about on two wheels. For a pleasant cycle or stroll in the local area, head inland to the small village of Baarland (five minutes' drive), where there are a handful of friendly local cafés, a handsome old church and the remains of a medieval castle. This family-friendly site has plenty of kid-pleasing options nearby, including Berkenhof zoo (10 minutes), the Goes-Borsele Steam Railway (20 minutes) and Mini Mundi theme park (30 minutes). Good news if urban day trips are your thing – several of the Low Countries' must-see cities are visitable if you make Camping Scheldeoord your base. Historic Middelburg (35 minutes) is the most sizeable town in Zeeland and full of canals and Gothic architecture and well worth a trip. Don't rule out cross-border jaunts into Belgium, either: the city lights of Antwerp are about an hour away and gorgeous Ghent around an hour and a quarter.
