Keen to see the wild Konik ponies and Highland cattle in Lauwersmeer National Park? Lay your head at Robersum Recreatie in rural Groningen and you’ll be a mere five minutes’ drive away from the park, its wetlands and wildlife. You should also feel nicely comfortable on the spacious grass pitches, which all have electric hookups and are well spaced with lots of greenery between them for extra privacy. This neatly kept and landscaped site covers about three and a half acres and has a pristine shower block – cleaned daily – with plenty of hot water. There is plenty of space for kids to run around and let off steam on the playing field, as well as a play area and sandbox with a water pump to help them keep cool on warmer days. You’re welcome to light a campfire at your pitch using the firepits provided for a memorable evening. Pets are also welcome, as long as they're kept on a leash on site. The level countryside surrounding the site will come in handy for family cycling trips and walks. For an urban day out, Robersum Recreatie is around half an hour’s drive from Groningen and Dokkum, while a little further away is Leeuwarden (45 minutes’ drive). The ferry to the minuscule island of Schiermonnikoog departs from Lauwersoog (10 minutes), and you can catch the boat to neighbouring Ameland from Holwerd (35 minutes) to see interactive wildlife exhibits and the aquarium at Natuurcentrum Ameland.

Ce camping est apprécié pour son atmosphère tranquille et ses emplacements spacieux. Les visiteurs ont aimé le verger charmant et les douches étaient jugées agréables. L'emplacement est excellent, sur une piste cyclable et proche de la ville, des commerces et des cafés. Le personnel, notamment Bob, était accueillant. Recommandé pour un séjour calme et ressourçant.

Staying by Lauwersmeer National Park (five minutes’ drive) certainly has its advantages for wildlife spotting, as its cycling trails put you in with a good chance of spotting eagles, grebes and the free-roaming Konik horses. The Kwelderweg cycling route, skirting the edge of the national park, is one of the most popular ways to take it all in. If birds are what you’re most interested in, station yourself at Vogelkijkhut De Baak (10 minutes), a hide overlooking the water; geese are often seen here going about their business. A little swim should feel nice and refreshing after all of those outdoor activities, so stop by Lauwersoog (15 minutes) for the lakeside beaches on the Lauwersmeer. If the kids are still asking you what’s next, you could take them along to DoeZoo Insektenwereld (10 minutes) for the petting zoo and (fittingly) insect-themed playground or Zoutkamp Fisheries Museum (five minutes) to walk through an old fisherman’s house and learn about the local fishing history. Further afield are Groningen (half an hour) for drinks alongside the historic canals, and lively Leeuwarden (45 minutes) for shops, museums and more waterside terraces.
