Stay close to base and wander around the Moletai Sculpture Park (10-minute drive) or get a good look at your surroundings from the Labanoras Regional Park Observation Tower (15 minutes). The Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology and sky observatory are also within easy reach (20 minutes). There’s a cracking bunch of stuff to do an hour’s drive away in Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, and the medieval Old Town – with its churches, museums, shops and restaurants – is a good place to start explores. In terms of sights, put Vilnius Cathedral, the Gothic St. Anne's Church and the 16th-century Gate of Dawn pilgrimage site on your list. Other landmarks worth ticking off while you’re here are the Gediminas Castle Tower and the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, which houses the National Museum. And if it’s museums you’re after, Vilnius has a fine selection to browse, including the Museum of Illusions, KGB Museum, Toy Museum and Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania. As for family days out, take your pick from animal, water and forest adventures. Zoopark, Vichy Water Park and UNO Park, an activity park with high ropes, are all around an hour away, as is Verkiai Regional Park, a forested parkland with walking trails and (as an added bonus) the Verkiai Palace within.
