If you fancy having a go at some water-based activities, this is a good place to aim for – the beach by the site has excellent conditions for beginners to try out their technique, while more intrepid types can sign up for self-propelled kayak or paddleboarding trips along the coastline. Kavourotripes beach is often a favourite on these tours; if you don’t feel up to kayaking all the way you can drive there in 10 minutes instead. For a taste of the area’s history and inland scenery, take a trip to Meteora to see some spectacular rock formations and marvel at how the area’s monasteries made it into their precarious cliffside locations. Thessaloniki, Greece’s second city, is certainly worth hauling yourself off the beach for, too. It’s a great city to wander around, with lots of tasty food and historic sights along the way. Both Meteora and Thessaloniki can be reached on day trips organised by the site, or are about an hour and 40 minutes away by car.
