With gorges, waterfalls and lakes all in the immediate surrounds, a stay at Minas Gerais site Canyons Camping Capitólio is pretty much always going to revolve around water. This safe and quiet woodland site is located in an area affectionately known as the Mar de Minas ('Minas Sea') because of its closeness to Capitólio lake, a cracking stretch of water a breezy five-minute drive from base.
This site’s in a prime setting 20 minutes' drive from the centre of Capitólio and within a 10-minute drive of top tourist spots like the Trilha do Sol ('Sun Trail'), Turvo Bridge and Furnas Dam. While visiting this last lakeside locale, sign up for a boat tour: gliding along the river, taking in spectacular vistas of huge canyons and the Lagoa Azul waterfall along the way, is one of the area's tiptop activities.
There's plenty of room at this spacious spot, whether you're looking for well-kept lawns to sunbathe on or open space to let the kids run riot for a bit. Breakfast is served on site each morning for sustenance ahead of day trips, and bites are also available here around dinnertime. Rather cook instead? A couple of communal kitchens should give plenty of space to whip up a meal. Sticking with the practicalities, this park has 11 heated showers, a washing-up area, sinks, wifi and sockets where guests can charge their gadgets.

Attractions à proximité
Capitalise on your closeness to the lakes and rivers around Capitólio with a trip to Furnas lake (10 minutes' drive) to see the 20-metre-high rock formations and emerald green waters. For a day out in nature, head to the Trilha do Sol (10 minutes): the 'Sun Trail' takes in three waterfalls and has a number of waymarked hikes that range in length and difficulty. Cascata Eco Park (20 minutes), meanwhile, has trails that visitors can stroll down to visit natural pools and more spectacular waterfalls.
Capitólio city centre (20 minutes) is another watery wonderland, with an artificial lakeside beach for freshwater swims and a promenade where visitors can take the air and gaze at the nearby hills. There's also a well-stocked local supermarket in town, along with a number of good restaurants and tour operators that organise boat and off-road trips for visitors.
For a high-altitude hike, try the mountainous treks and spectacular vistas at Morro do Chapéu (40 minutes). This rugged spot is a haven for wildlife: creatures including wolves and armadillos still roam free around these parts.
