You know you’re booking into a place with a good bit of personality when you learn that the owners have a Highland cow called Bonnie, who’s particularly partial to custard creams… Abergwynant Farm Glamping is a family-run Gwynedd business that’s been welcoming guests to Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park for more than 70 years. Current owner Richard started running the place in 2020, taking over from his nan Doris (although she still plays an active part in keeping the lovely gardens in bloom throughout the year). It's not just Bonnie that you'll see at the farm; there are also horses. The animals are all lucky enough to live on this gorgeous farm, which is spread across 400 acres of land and takes in lakes, forests and gold mines, all set in the foothills of Cadair Idris (one of the highest mountains in the national park). Keen to see more? There’s direct road-free access to the Mawddach Trail for easy walks or bike rides to Barmouth, Dolgellau or Fairbourne. Handily, there’s a pub about 40 minutes’ walk along the trail for a bit of refreshment too. Back at base, there are helpful amenities including a shower and toilet block with an outdoor tap.

Les visiteurs ont trouvé l'endroit excellent, appréciant les belles promenades et l'atmosphère paisible d'une "vallée cachée". Points forts : hôtes sympathiques et prévenants, fourniture de lait, animaux charmants, notamment Bonnie la vache des Highlands. Beaucoup souhaitent revenir, l'un réservant à nouveau bientôt.

A aimé Location is very pretty, quiet and we enjoyed being able to cycle out along the estuary. Rich came by to say hello and made us feel very welcome. Pitch was simple but private and we enjoyed our stay, hope to visit again sometime.

A aimé A single pitch on site.. do not be put off thinking you are going into the farmers yard.. we placed our van sideways and had a view of the horses and the highland cow lodge.. beautiful walks from the site and felt we were in a hidden valley

Itinéraire

From the direction of Dolgellau on the A493, the entrance is on the right-hand side of the main road. There is a sign on the wall with the name Abergwynant Farm. Head down the driveway and over the humpback bridge on your left. You'll see a couple of wooden gates next to the log cabin. Head through the gates to the motorhome pitches. For camping, continue a bit further along to the car park. There is a paddock opposite the car park with the camping pitches.

Attractions à proximité

Once you’ve meandered along the Mawddach Trail, you might like to set your sights on a bigger challenge by climbing Cadair Idris – it is within walking distance of the farm. If mountain biking is more your style, you’ll want to head for Coed y Brenin Forest Park (15 minutes’ drive), known as one of the country’s top mountain bike sites. Of course, you might just want to take it easy instead – in which case, you can follow walking trails from Dolgellau (10 minutes) or ride the Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog (40 minutes) up to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Alternatively, stick around at the coast for the lovely sandy beaches of Fairbourne (10 minutes) and Barmouth (20 minutes, linked by a short ferry across the estuary or head up to Harlech Castle (40 minutes), in a spectacular clifftop spot high above the dunes below. A little further north is Portmeirion (40 minutes), an Italian-style village with colourful houses and acres of subtropical garden to explore.
