You won’t have to climb up a tree (or travel to Beijing…) to stay at The Bird’s Nest, about 25 minutes’ drive from the harbour town of Aberaeron (and Cardigan Bay), in south-western Wales. This pop-up site on a 12-acre off-grid smallholding is pretty remote, though, and accessed via a single-track road that cuts through some spectacular countryside. Things are chilled and peaceful here, with alpacas grazing in the field and warblers singing in the trees. There are no playgrounds and no loud activities on site, just a small rowing boat for paddling around the calm pond and a covered terrace where guests can relax with a drink as they gaze across the landscape. Oh, and the occasional crafts workshop (from willow weaving to pom-pom making), talk or therapy session; please book these in advance. There is much to do in the surrounding area, though, whether it’s fishing (there are a couple of ponds within a 10-minute drive) or hiking, with woodland trails at Coed Y Foel, The Woodland Trust (15 minutes’ drive), Sifigwm (20 minutes) and Cenarth Falls (35 minutes). Those who prefer windswept seafront walks head to Cardigan Bay, where the Ceredigion Coast Path winds past Aberaeron, Aberarth and Llanon (half an hour). The nearest pub to the site (in Gorsgoch, five minutes) also serves grills, burgers and a range of pub classics; and if you need the shops, there are a couple on the A475 just the other side of Llanwnnen (five to ten minutes), or in Lampeter (10 minutes).

Attractions à proximité

National Trust - Llanerchaeron (20 minutes’ drive) is an elegant Georgian villa from the late 18th century. It has well-preserved servants’ quarters (including a brewery and a dairy); a farm with local and rare breeds of sheep and pigs; a colourful walled kitchen garden; and vast parkland laced with trails. In addition to being the place for watersports and boat trips (whether fishing charters or marine wildlife tours to see bottlenose dolphins), New Quay (25 minutes) has a sheltered beach to the east. To the west, clifftop walks on the Banc Bach y Rhowyn headland lead to the Old Lookout, with sweeping views of the bay. The medieval castle on the River Afon in Cardigan (40 minutes) is dotted with interesting installations, from the oversized Eisteddfod Chair to a whale bone arch. On the outskirts of town, the Welsh Wildlife Centre sits next to the Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve, where you might spot kingfishers, peregrine falcons and otters.
