With the landscapes of the North York Moors National Park all around and the coastline only about 10 minutes’ drive away, this is a nifty location for a North Yorkshire outdoor break. Clover Hill Farm is a family-run site in the hamlet of Scaling, up at the northern end of the national park about 20 minutes’ drive from Whitby. That location means there are plenty of options around for activities and days out, with hiking/cycle trails galore nearby, plus outings to beaches and seaside towns. And you won’t have to travel far to get your scenery/activity fix, as a 15-minute walk gets you to the waterfall at Roxby Mill. Alternatively, a five-minute stroll takes you to Scaling Reservoir for fishing, walks and watersports (or a game of crazy golf and a good meal at the waterside pub). Tailoring your break to your style is easy here – you can keep things simple or boost your break with various extras like barbecue hire, prosecco buckets and birthday banners. On arrival you can also sort things like local barbecue meat packs and outdoor games hire (giant Jenga, supersized Twister, that sort of thing…) Guest facilities centre around a shepherd’s hut washroom (with hot showers and flushing toilets) and a well-equipped kitchen hut with a mini oven, double hob, microwave, fridges and various pots, pans and utensils. Outside, there’s a large mowed area for games or for groups to gather. The folk that own this site are passionate about the environment, so they’ve made a concerted effort to plant new trees and hedging to create wildlife corridors and enhance the site’s biodiversity. Owl and bat boxes on site mean you may well see and/or hear these species at some point during your stay.

Ce petit camping très apprécié est bien entretenu, avec des emplacements spacieux et privés dans un bel endroit. Les clients soulignent la propreté des installations, les cuisines bien équipées et les douches. Les propriétaires aimables sont souvent mentionnés. A aimé Loved loved loved this site. Spacious quiet pitches in the most beautiful surroundings. Well kitted out small kitchen area and really good showers. Could maybe do with more than 2 toilets and 2 showers for the whole site but was not really a problem and most people used them sensibly. Loved the little coffee shop with snacks and cold drinks and even ice creams. Coffee you paid on card, the rest was via honesty box, nice little touch! Kitchen has kettle, microwave and small camping oven as well as 2 communal fridges to use. Utensils too in case you forgot something. Can see why they get a too score. Glamping tents looked amazing. Will be using this as a regular spot cos felt totally safe with being on my own. And because it's a small site, you got to speak to most people on the site which was nice!

N'a pas aimé One woman decided to have a full wet wipe clean including getting dressed and makeup on in 1 of the 2 toilets in the morning when people were queuing. She forgot her towel so did not shower. I asked her why use a toilet when she could have used a shower room???? Some people don't have much sense or courtesy to fellow campers!! But not the sites fault!
Bring ear plugs cos birds can be a bit noisy during the night over at the reservoir, not really a dislike. Any site in the countryside will have animal noises!!
Did not see anything about WiFi but I never asked either haha

A aimé Beautiful location, small site (which we wanted), very comfortable and level pitches with a decent amount of space between pitches.
Well equipped and maintained kitchen hut, washroom and shop. The option of paying for items from the shop with cash or via your phone was particularly handy.
Wonderful first family camping stay.

N'a pas aimé More trolleys would have been welcome and larger ones too for those who have brought a lot of equipment.
An extra couple of toilets would be helpful particularly at busier times of the day.

A aimé Lovely site, not crowded and pitches nicely separated. Great facilities and such friendly and welcoming hosts. Love the re wilding and eco credentials.

N'a pas aimé Just missing a freezer - really useful for re freezing ice packs for campers with their own food and travelling on.

Attractions à proximité

There’s a whole lot of choice around here when it comes to walks and bike rides – and as the farm is on a public right of way, you can get started straight from the gate. Some of the top spots nearby include Blakey Ridge (20 minutes’ drive), Roseberry Topping (25 minutes) and the Hole of Horcum (half an hour). Not up for the exercise? Ride the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Goathland (25 minutes). The national park stretches all the way to the coast, taking in seaside towns like Runswick Bay (10 minutes), Staithes (15 minutes) and Robin Hood’s Bay (half an hour). Saltburn-by-the-Sea (20 minutes) is another popular spot, with a lovely beach, a pier and a funicular railway to ride. The highlight for many, though, is a trip to Whitby (20 minutes), where you can stroll through the Old Town, climb the famed 199 Steps and visit the abbey, as well as spending time on the beach.
