Perfect quiet site in the Northumberland countryside

Apr 2026

Liked We love this campsite. Peaceful and handy for cracking walls into Wark Forest. Facilities are basic but clean, tidy and do the job. Campsite is very eco friendly with facilities run from solar and wind power. Hook up available but we’ve never needed it. Handy shop for any basics. No pub on the village but the community hall has a pop up bar on weekends.

Disliked Nothing.

Good site, plenty of space, quirky facilities.

Mar 2026

Liked Our third stay here. Spacious grass non-EHU pitches, with a pitch where you like set up. There are maybe 8 or so EHU pitches as well and the owners were putting in some more hard standings. We had the site to ourselves, very peaceful save for some crow scarers going off on nearby farms. Showers are under the trees, hot water but “airy” so chilly in early spring. Composting toilets were clean and tidy, although when the site is busier they can get untidy, but there is a number to call to alert staff. Coffee barn is lovely, good coffee, tea and cakes with a bike hire/repair place and some locally sourced gift shop. Handy walking routes directly from site.

Disliked Nothing.

Good basic pop up site.

Aug 2025

Liked Basic pop up campsite with limited facilities and the price reflects that. Large open field, rough cut grass with plenty of space to not feel hemmed in or on top of your camping neighbours. Stayed only one night but it was incredibly peaceful, all of the units were mindful of their neighbours and there was not a peep of noise overnight. No tents allowed on the site so campers expected to be self sufficient and provide their own shower/washing up facilities - which is fine for us. Location is great - handy for two of Northumberland’s secluded beaches and for walking the coastal paths. The car park at Newton Links does get busy and is pay and display. Good pub in the village - but book a table in advance if you want to eat inside as it was busy (lots of fellow campers in there too). No wifi - to be expected in a pop up site - but decent 4g phone coverage. There were children on site, quietly entertaining themselves but there are no children’s facilities - except for the vast expanse of sand and dunes a few minutes walk away! We will be back here again.

Disliked The two portaloos were stinking by Sunday morning - there must be so many motor homers who have the ‘no poo’ rule!

Good adults only site

Jul 2025

Liked Second stay at Valley View and the site has been expanded and improved since our last visit. The old toilet/shower cabin is now a very well stocked honesty shop selling camping essentials, wood/kindling, food basics and treats such as cake and pies (use it or lose it). The unisex toilets are much improved along with 2 unisex showers in a new block along with a new washing up area, complete with campers fridge, microwave and kettle. There is WiFi but we didn’t use it. The hardstandings are small but will become more private once the separating hedges grow in. Adults only site which is great but it’s also quiet, it’s not a party site. Easy to get onto the Cinder Track for walks direct from site and Ravenscar is a couple of miles down the road. Scarborough and Whitby not far away either. We will be back again

Disliked Most tent and hard standing pitches by the barn have no view. That’s ok for us but others may be put off by it. There is some road noise but that’s only an issue for use because of our traffic noise sensitive dog.

Cheap, no frills site

Aug 2024

Liked Adults only. Price point and handy for St Asaph Huge pitches with plenty of space. Pitches are on a slight slope so levelers may be needed for some units. Thoughtful addition of picnic benches at the motorhome pitches. Toilets clean and tidy.

Disliked Grass needed to be mowed. The night we stayed there was a random man wandering round the site until late, he didn’t seem to be with any of the other campers and spent most of the time sat in the dark in the green pot wash hut. A bit creepy if I’m honest and would put off solo travelers.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi yes. The grass has now been mowed. We do need to do it quicker next time. The man was a local farm hand who was staying on the farm next door who thought it was the farmers campsite so was wandering about. I have had confirmation he has now left the area. So that’s good news and thankfully too !!!

Small, peaceful site

Aug 2024

Liked This site is incredibly quiet and peaceful. Adults only so great for our child reactive dog. Well maintained and huge grass pitches, handy picnic benches provided. Only one toilet and shower which were spotless and the site wasn’t busy so no waiting. A mop in the shower would help campers also keep it clean. We only booked one night but stayed 2.

Disliked The owner runs a haulage business as well. They weren’t noisy at all, but light sleepers may be woken by the drivers coming into site next door to start work early mornings on weekdays

From the manager: We are glad you had a good stay with us. Thank you for visiting Wellwood.

Nice site, will be perfect for many but not for us.

Jul 2024

Liked Good sized grass pitches, although if you have a big unit and awning you might feel a little cramped with your neighbors. Grass pitches were firm but didn’t need rock pegs. The site is pretty and well maintained. Good facilities, EHU available, plenty of bins and the owners seem to be making continual improvements. Toilet and shower block immaculate, plenty of hot water.

Disliked Shower heads are fixed too high on the wall meaning the spray spread is so wide that it hardly hits you and needs many more button presses to get shampoo rinsed out. This feels a waste of water which could be remedied by a different shower head. Road noise. Now this won’t be a problem for most but our traffic noise sensitive dog was scared for most of our stay because of the traffic noise. The lane is single track but motorists treat it as a bit of a race course, sadly this is the only reason why we wouldn’t return as it’s just not fun seeing your family pet so frightened but I totally accept that there is nothing that the site owners can do about it and is just our problem to manage. During our stay, three pods seemed to be booked by a group of young lads/lasses who got drunk and started to wildly hit golf balls at the touring and camping pitches, owners put a stop to it quickly.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, and am sorry to hear it wasn't quite the site for you. With regard to the shower, we will take this on board and have a look at different shower heads, thank you for mentioning this. Unfortunately like you say there is little I can do about traffic noise, although I would say it is a single lane and not a busy main road and there is not constant traffic all day. With regard to other campers it is rare we have pods booked together we do not encourage groups, unfortunately sometimes it isn't until they arrive we realise they all know each other but we do act quickly on any behaviour that is not acceptable.

Good site with good facilities, friendly family owners & flat pitches

Aug 2022

Liked Quiet, adult only site. Spacious mostly flat pitches, with good privacy screening from hedges. New toilet block, water points close to most pitches. Excellent dog exercise area. Handy shop for essentials.

Disliked Grey waste disposal is via a manhole which some users may find difficult to lift. The new toilet block had some issues with drain smells, particularly in hot weather. Some users of the toilet block didn’t clean up after themselves - not the sites fault but this seems to be a growing problem.

Despite the issues, we would stay again

Sept 2020

Liked £16 per night, no EHU. It’s a pitch where you like site, in a series of fairly flat fields, on top of a hill. They ask for 3m between units. Showers are brand new, clean and hot. Push button operation but with no temp control so might be too hot for some. Toilets are new and clean. Remember to take your own loo roll though as they are not providing due to Covid. There’s an outdoor covered pot wash, water points, a chest freezer that can used by campers and a usb charging point. On the site, there is also a small shop with essentials, a pop up tavern selling some hot food, breakfasts and beer! The pub was well run and quiet for a Friday night, the food was basic but tasty.

Disliked The hand wash areas at the toilet block have cold water only and no drying facilities, so take a small hand towel or prepare to shake your hands dry. A mixed group of 2 families decided to use the hedgerow/longer grass behind their tent as a potty disposal place with no regard for who might be pitched there next 🤢 Given current Covid restrictions, there were a number of very large groups meeting up on site, all well in excess of the latest rule of 6. This might not be an issue for some but for me, it felt unsafe.
