  • Off-grid Utah park south of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks
  • A mile from Church Rock; 15 minutes' drive from Monticello
  • Spacious glamping tents with comfortable interiors and decking
Torn between convenient pre-pitched accommodation and off-grid breaks in the back of beyond? With its remote desert location and comfortable bell tents, this Utah glamping park strikes a brilliant balance between both. Each tent here is furnished with a queensize mattress, chairs, rugs and LED candles and has a spacious private decking area just outside. Amenities include flush toilets, hot showers and a communal outdoor cooking area; fresh tea and coffee are also available each morning. Glamping Canyonlands is a wifi-free zone, so you'll have little trouble getting a thorough tech detox here. (You'll be given free use of a quick-charging battery pack if you really do need to rejuice your phone, though.) With such fine views and dark nights apt for sky-gazing, stays here will likely revolve around whiling the hours away on deckchairs outside your tent or huddling around the flickering flames of a campfire. Away from base, ace adventures are up for grabs in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park (45 minutes' drive) or Arches National Park (50 minutes). You'll also want to stop off in nearby Monticello (15 minutes), the nearest town. Once you've stocked up on food and fluids (and lots of them – there's no running water on site), take a turn round the town's Frontier Museum or scout out local dining spots.

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine part of the world for desert-touring day trips. Close to base (about a mile away, in fact) is Church Rock, a spectacular sandstone column. Also close, Newspaper Rock (15 minutes' drive) combines geology and history with its remarkable rock panel that’s covered with 2,000-year-old petroglyphs. Up for rafting through more desert scenery? Make for Moab (40 minutes) and pick any one of the town's several watersports outfits. As you may well have guessed from this campsite's name, it's easy to take a spin around all three parts of nearby Canyonlands National Parks (45 minutes), whether you opt for hiking in the Needles, admiring the overlooks in the Island in the Sky or off-roading around the Maze. And so onwards to Arches National Park (50 minutes), another well-preserved stretch of wilderness with over 2,000 natural rock arches. High up on the Colorado Plateau, folk flock here from all around to admire natural attractions like Delicate Arch, Double Arch and Balanced Rock. It can get a little busy hereabouts, with photographers vying to take the best snap (especially during the sunset golden hour), so if crowds aren't your thing head out of the park and try your luck at quieter Wilson Arch (15 minutes).
