  • Family-friendly park in the Alaska Range foothills
  • An hour’s drive from Denali National Park and Fairbanks
  • Miniature golf, cycle hire, store, pavilion and fishing gear rental
In the indigenous Athabascan language, Nenana means ‘a good place to camp between two rivers’. And that surely holds true at Nenana RV Park and Campground, a family-friendly park on the edge of Nenana village in western Alaska. The village is bound on two sides by the Tanana and Nenana rivers, and there’s loads in the area to make any stay worthwhile, including (surely everyone’s dream activity) dog sledding – there are several spots around here to choose from. If you’d prefer to explore under your own steam, you can hire bicycles or try to nab one of the four-wheel, two-person cycles for a little adventure. Want something a tad more sedate? Rent fishing gear to cast a line on one of those rivers. Back at base, there’s plenty to keep you occupied if you’re not feeling particularly adventurous: play a round of miniature golf, hang out with your fellow guests at the communal pavilion, or just skip straight to the fun bit by starting the barbecue for dinner (you can nab snacks in the mini store, or head to the nearby market for anything more substantial). Once you’ve eaten your fill, kick back next to the firepit for an evening of stargazing – Nenana is a prime spot for a little aurora borealis spotting, so you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights…

Local attractions

Start your stay with a tour of Nenana, checking out the Alaska Railroad Depot Museum, the visitor centre and gallery (and its roof of colourful summer flowers), and the Alfred Starr Cultural Center and Museum dedicated to Athabascan culture. Time your stay right and you might even catch the end of the hotly contended Ice Classic (that’s one you definitely need to look up…). For a different and more cosmopolitan experience of Alaska, make your way to Fairbanks, an hour from Nenana. There’s loads there you’ll want to add to the list: visits to the Museum of the North, Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum and Georgeson Botanical Garden come highly recommended, and you can also see a small slice of home base with the SS Nenana (a steamwheel paddleship built and launched in Nenana in the 1930s), on display in Pioneer Park theme park. If you want to spend part of your getaway getting to grips with nature, then make a beeline for Denali National Park, to hike lengthy trails and skyscraping mountains (Denali is the highest peak in North America). Also around the park, take to the rapids for some whitewater rafting or go on a flyover, all while keeping your eyes peeled for Alaska’s Big Five: bears, wolves, caribou, moose and dall sheep.
