Keen on the idea of whitewater rafting down rapids? Trout fishing on a gentle riverside? Rock climbing in a national park? Those of you who count activities in the outdoors as an essential on your holiday itinerary will meet your match at Beaver Lakes Campground. This dog-friendly site is well-situated for all sorts of outdoor escapades, from waterskiing and swimming at Summersville Lake (20 minutes’ drive) to rock climbing in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve (35 minutes). Don’t be fooled, though, as this outdoors-oriented escape begins on the site. With over 250 acres of sloping mountainous terrain, there are hiking trails right on your doorstep and a variety of animal life, plants and trees around the site. That’s not forgetting the six large ponds (some constructed by beavers), handy for starting the morning off with a fishing trip minus the hassle of heading off site. Despite all the wildness, things are nicely well maintained, with facilities including a play area, showers and space to rustle up a barbecue or firepit of your own. For those favourite bits you’ll want to roast over the flames, there are a couple of food shops five minutes’ drive away. And when your tummy is calling for a meal out without any food prepping of your own, there are a variety of restaurants, takeaways and other places to eat out in the same place.

Local attractions

Everything water-based runs strong around this area of the world, whether it's boating, waterskiing, scuba diving and fishing at Summersville Lake (20 minutes' drive), swimming, fishing and boating around Watoga State Park (an hour and 15 minutes) or whitewater rafting and fishing at Gauley River National Recreation Area (55 minutes). At Babcock State Park (45 minutes), there’s whitewater rafting, boating and fishing again, but you’ll also have a nice choice between hiking and mountain biking trails, the latter being particularly suited to the more adventurous souls in your gang. New River Gorge National Park and Preserve (35 minutes) has a similar situation, as there’s whitewater rafting and fishing or mountain biking and hiking, but here you'll also get to go rock climbing if you wish. Hiking has a good kick around here too. You might want to begin with the riverside course along the Tri Rivers Rail Trail (20 minutes), wildlife spotting around the Cranberry Glades (55 minutes) or even a more metropolitan wander to check out Charleston’s historic market, city parks and the Rainbow Row (an hour and a half).
