  • Large, scenic campground with an off-grid, eco-friendly approach
  • In south Texas, 45 miles from Big Bend National Park
  • Secluded sites on a working poultry, goat and aquaponics ranch
This spectacular south Texas ranch is set out in the wilderness, just under five miles off State Highway 118. This scenic and secluded park is very private and has next to no light pollution, making it an excellent base for admiring the starry night sky. With far-reaching panoramas over the mountains and deserts typical of the Big Bend area, here you can see for up to 50 miles on clear days. This is a wild-style site, with a range of different pitches for different styles. The whole place is off-grid and spacious, so folks looking for privacy can easily set up far from their nearest neighbour. Days at Eco-Ranch Sustainable Living Center start with sunrise (or just before sunrise, as the roosters tend to start crowing a little earlier over on the farm). In terms of facilities, the site has a modern toilet block plus kitchen facilities with two stoves, counter space and charging points. Hot showers are available for a small extra charge – please be mindful of how much water and gas you use, as all resources need to be brought in from a supplier 50 miles away. Farm produce is also on offer here, with fresh eggs, seasonal vegetables and poultry meat available to buy. Because of its isolated location, please make sure that you arrive at the ranch before dark. The owners are more than happy to help with directions and advice on reaching them. Please note that firearms are not permitted at Days at Eco-Ranch Sustainable Living Center.

Local attractions

There's no getting away from the fact that this Texas site is off the beaten track. Most guests here will want to take the time to explore Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park, both of which are under an hour's drive away from base and have excellent opportunities for hiking, spotting wildlife and immersing yourself in the wilderness. You're also around two hours' drive from the McDonald Observatory for telescope tours, lectures about the solar system and interactive exhibits. On the way there (or back), make sure to stop off for a few hours at the Marfa Lights Viewing Area (an hour and 30 minutes) – there's no telling whether the mysterious illuminations often seen here are caused by ghosts, UFOs or something more mundane, so your best bet’s to come along and see for yourself… Eco-Ranch Sustainable Living Center is also about three miles from a local swimming hole off Terlingua Creek (ask your hosts for directions).
