  • RV park in a pecan orchard on the banks of Lake Chicot
  • Private 300-foot pier and boat launch for fishing
  • Jim Henson Museum and Lake Chicot State Park within a half-hour drive
A lovely lakeside location with over 200 feet of shoreline and a splendid shaded orchard (full of pecan trees, in case you’d not already guessed…). If you think that sounds simply idyllic, take a peek at the aptly-named Pecan Grove RV Park, five minutes’ drive from the equally aptly-named Arkansas town of Lake Village. The lake in question (for both town and RV park) is Lake Chicot, North America’s largest oxbow lake (that’s a U-shaped one that’s been cut off from a river, for those whose memory of school geography terms is somewhat hazy). It’s a fab destination for folks who like to fish – the waters of the 20-mile lake teem with bluegill, bass and catfish, and it’s as easy as could be to get at them from the park’s private 300-foot pier or by taking your boat to the launch area. If you’ve had a successful day on the lake you can prep your catch at the cleaning station; if it wasn’t your lucky day you’re only a few minutes’ drive from restaurants or supermarkets for picking up supplies to cook out on the barbecue. A shared firepit is on hand if you’d rather just gather for fireside drinks and gossip. And if the kids lost interest in lake-based antics round about the time they learned about fish cleaning? Dispatch them to the playground to play on the swings, climb the dragon tyres and shoot some hoops.

Local attractions

All this and Muppets too… the Jim Henson Museum (half an hour’s drive) has been set up at the birthplace of Kermit the Frog: take a trip over here and you can come face to face with the famed frog (now spending his retirement in a display case) and other bits and bobs of Muppet memorabilia. Also worth visiting while you’re over paying homage to the frog is the nearby Highway 61 Blues Museum, which tells the musical tales of around 80 Delta Blues artists from the local area. More local history from different points in the past can be encountered at the Greenville History Museum (25 minutes) or the prehistoric Winterville Mounds (half an hour). The smart Lakeport Plantation House (15 minutes’ drive) shows another side of local history, detailing life for both plantation owners and the slaves they brought to the country. For a bit of fresh air to follow up all your history lessons, take the 15-minute drive to Lake Chicot State Park to see what wildlife you can spot as you hike the trails or paddle a kayak along the waterways. Don’t worry about overheating – you can cool off by plunging into the open-air pool during summer season.
