- Relaxed clothing-optional campground in Talladega National Forest
- A 15-minute drive to Talladega; 40 minutes to Cheaha State Park
- Wooded park over 40 acres, with half a mile of creek for fishing
Parksland Retreat is an off-grid Alabama site where guests can get back to nature among 40 acres of woodland on the banks of a creek (and with half a mile of access to the water).
This is a park that prides itself on welcoming all visitors equally: it’s BIPOC and LGBTQ-friendly and has a clothing-optional rule that means guests can choose the full fresh-air experience of a nudist holiday if they wish (you’re just as welcome if you’d rather stay fully clothed, of course, but you’ll need to be aware that your fellow guests might wish to strip off).
Stays here centre around an old homestead within the Talladega National Forest, so it’s a fine base for a rural break: hikers can head out on two miles of trail just by the park (following the map from the park’s trailhead) or pick up the Pinhoti/Appalachian Trails three miles away. If you’ve got fishing kit, bring it along to try your luck in the creek.
As befits a secluded natural park like this, barbecues and campfires are permitted in the fire rings provided (supplies can be picked up 15 minutes’ drive away in Talladega, but please don’t bring your own firewood). There’s no electricity here, but hot showers are available (natural soaps only and no detergents, thanks).
The vibe of this place is very much one of rural peace, so there’s a quiet time rule in place from 10pm to 9am every night. Handily the park is mainly mosquito-free, but from spring to autumn it’s a good idea to bring along lemon or eucalyptus spray to ward off midges.
