  • Family-friendly park in the spectacularly scenic Pioneer Valley
  • Explorers’ haven: hikes, bikes, outdoor adventures within 30 minutes
  • On-site swimming pool, recreation hall, ball field and horseshoe court
Leave busy work life behind with a restorative nature-filled stay at White Birch Campground, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the small town of Whately, Massachusetts. As the park's in the stunningly scenic Pioneer Valley and at the foot of the Berskhires, you can expect your stay here to be spent mostly outdoors. Rambles are a must, so make a beeline to Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation 10 minutes away for hikes and bikes on the wooded banks of the Connecticut river, or venture just a little further to follow the 30-mile Mohawk Trail from Historic Deerfield. Fancy a day of peaceful river travel? Make your way to the Fife Brook Dam under an hour away, drop your inflatable in the river and have a peaceful few hours of tubing along the Deerfield. If that’s not your speed, have a lazy day back at base, tossing a ball around, challenging the family to a volleyball game or taking a dip in the swimming pool. All that fresh air will get you craving food in no time, so rest assured you won’t have to go hungry round here – there’s a small store for basic supplies, or you can head into South Deerfield (five minutes) for food to pile on the barbecue or for local eats at one of the restaurants.

Local attractions

If you’ve got energy left to burn, you’re not done yet – within half an hour’s drive of White Birch, stops at Zoar Outdoor Adventures and Berkshire East Mountain Resort will get you set up for ziplining, rafting, kayaking, rock climbing and a coaster between the trees. When it's time for something a little more slow paced, start with Historic Deerfield, an open-air museum where you can explore antique houses from 18th- and 19th-century New England, then keep one foot in the past with a few hours’ antiquing at Whitney Hill Antiques in Greenfield, 15 minutes away. Get your fill of nature by flitting about at the Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory and Gardens outside Deerfield, and give yourself a sense of healthy achievement with some apple picking at Clarkdale Fruit Farms (don’t forget to pick up some sweet cider before you leave). For anyone who lives and breathes scented candles, a poke around the Yankee Candles flagship store will be a match made in heaven (sorry) and having a go at making your own wax masterpieces and picking up some custom jars will bring light into your life (sorry again). If this is all too pastoral for your tastes, take a 20-minute drive into Northampton city for galleries, museums, breweries, botanic gardens, campus tours at Smith, the Coolidge Presidential Library and – of course – shopping.
