What should you pack for your stay at Göreme Panorama Camping, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from Göreme in the Cappadocia region of Nevşehir province? Simple: comfy shoes, a camera and a sense of adventure... Known as the land of the beautiful horses, it shouldn't surprise that Cappadocia is a prime spot for equine explores – the scenic valleys around Göreme and in its national park are well suited to horseback excursions, so clamber into the saddle (stables within 15 minutes) for trips among fairy chimneys and cave dwellings. Exchange four legs for four off-roading wheels on ATV tours if you prefer or, if you’re tired of ground-level adventures, you could always see everything from the air… Watch the hot air balloons that are famous in Cappadocia rise above the horizon while you sip your morning coffee, then stroll five minutes down the road to nab a spot in one of the colourful soarers. Cool off after dusty desert days with a dip in the on-site pool, then wander over to the café for a Turkish coffee or to puff away on a hookah. Feeling peckish? Pick up nibbles in the small market, cook in the shared kitchen, or pull up a chair in the restaurant to try out some local treats made fresh on site or ordered from nearby restaurants.

Local attractions

There’s plenty nearby for history buffs to sink their teeth into: within 15 minutes’ drive of the site, there are two open-air museums centring on millennia-old cave dwellings; a town that's been producing pottery since 2000 BC, and a handful of churches and castles hewn out of the rock. Venture slightly further, and you’ll come to Cappadocia’s largest and deepest underground cities, Kaymakli and Derinkuyu, each around 30 minutes away. For city days, take the car for the hour-long journey to Kayseri: there’s lots here to keep you busy, like museums, monuments and walking tours around stunning architecture, as well as some fab shopping. It's also the exact place you should point your skis if you’re after some snowy adventures, as nearby Mount Erciyes has 55 kilometres of slopes for you to whoosh down and there’s a glacier to clamber around if you need a break from the powder. Make some time to pamper yourself before your hols come to an end, by caking yourself in mud at Camur Magarasi Katpatuka or signing up for hammam treatments and massage at the Cappadocia Cave Resort spa, both within 10 minutes. Then try the Turasan vineyard in nearby Ürgüp or the Kocabag Winery in Uçhisar for tours and (best of all) tastings to let the last of your stress melt away.
