  • Well-kept site on the banks of Lac de Neuchâtel in Grandson
  • Yverdon-les-Bains 10 minutes' drive; half an hour to Vallorbe Caves
  • Beach area and paddleboard hire on site; restaurant next door
Keen on watersports? Or just like a lovely lake view for your chilled-out holiday downtime? Both options can be part of your day when you stay at Camping Le Pécos, on the banks of Lac de Neuchâtel in Grandson. This is the largest lake in Switzerland, so it’s no surprise to find that the views here are pretty fabulous – and you'll be able to admire them all day long if you like, settling down at the lake beach area and perhaps venturing into the water from time to time to cool off. There's also a beach volleyball court if you'd rather indulge your competitive side, plus a boat ramp where you can launch kayaks or small boats – and you can rent paddleboards to take out on the water too. Back on dry land, there’s a play area in the campsite (and another two next door), a couple of pétanque courts and three ping pong tables, along with a small number of bikes to rent. Tennis, climbing and a trampoline gym are a short walk away, if you need a bit more activity in your day. And the lake isn’t the only scenic feature in the area, so you can plan days of hiking nearby too. Sounds like you’ll need to stay well fed to get through all these activities… and handily that should be fairly easy to do as the site has a well-stocked mini market with plenty of essentials alongside local produce (meats, cheeses, baked goods and beers among them). There's also a restaurant next door that's particularly well known for its lake perch fillets.

Liked: Just back from a fantastic stay at this campsite. The owners were extremely accommodating and made us feel very welcome. The little shop on-site is really handy. The WiFi works well, I was able to complete some work easily. There is so much to occupy children of all ages, with multiple parks, a beach area and the lake, which you can swim in. There are showers to wash off too. The site is small, so everything isn't too far away. The cleanliness of the site and shower/toilet facilities, was outstanding and considerably cleaner than anywhere else we've stayed. Everyone was friendly and the site at night was peaceful, quiet and dark. Perfect for our children to get a good night's sleep. There are paddle boards to hire, which we made use of, very easy to hire. The laundrette on-site was super handy for washing towels from lake swimming. We didn't use the restaurant as couldn't get booked in any night, due to the size of our family (5) but it was packed every night and the food smelt fantastic. We did use the outdoor bar, which was a nice spot with a play area by the seating. There are lots of amenities a short drive away too which was handy, including an Aldi and petrol station. Highly recommend this site if you're travelling from the UK and want somewhere to feel welcome and comfortable with your young children. We will definitely be back!

Disliked: Not so much a dislike, more a mention. There are some additional costs to be aware of once you arrive. We did know of them already so it was fine, but it is only in the small print. There are taxes to pay on arrival. And the showers need tokens. There is also a deposit for a car parking pass and the laundry token. All were easy enough, but worth mentioning. We were actually a little worried about the shower tokens. But it was fine, as you can stop/start them whilst washing, so you don't use all the time at once. We used 1 token per adult shower, and 2 children per 1 token. If you're planning to hire gas cylinders you will need an adaptor, they're not the same fitting as in the UK. The site itself is a fair distance from the main tourist areas of Switzerland, we knew this already, as we were wanting to be closer to local friends. But again just worth mentioning. There are still wonderful views all around, and Grandson itself is beautiful!

Liked: Great stay.We had a small tent. The pitch was literally 3m from the lake. The view was amazing. Clean toilets, drinking water, small shop... basically everything that you need.

Disliked: Parking is 5e per day. Not problem at all. But if you want free parking-kust park outside on the road

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: Cleanliness, very friendly receptionist, location to lake and grandson, park near restaurant and the pontoon on the lake

Disliked: We were given a better pitch, meaning we were right on the front but we were never asked if we wanted to leave during our 2 night stay. We were in a motorhome so normally you would, shortly after we set up another motorhome was pitched behind us blocking us in. The pitches were very tight too.

From the manager: We are happy you enjoyed your stay with us. Thank you very much for this nice rating. We are sorry we didn't ask you if you wanted to move during your stay. We normally do, but we must have forgotten. And it's true that this pitch is a bit tighter than most. But as it is the only one for motorhomes directly on the lake, people don't usually mind and we keep renting it. We look forward to welcoming you again.

Liked: Lige ned til Lac de Neuchâtel (søen), med slot og bjerge i baggrunden. Sødt og rart personale.

Disliked: Toget kører hver 5. minut lige op af pladsen og toiletterne er slidte. Mangler købmand

From the manager: We are happy you enjoyed the views and our service. Unfortunately, we cannot do anything about the train line. Most people are happy there is a train station at only 10 minutes by foot to be able to travel around. We really don't know what was bad with the toilets. We keep them clean at all times and everything is functional. Maybe you could let us know how we could improve that point ? And we do have a shop, right next to the entrance, open every day of the week. Didn't you notice it ? We hope to be able to welcome you again another time to show you the shop and to improve your impression on our facilities. We wish you all the best in your future travels.

Local attractions

The town of Grandson should be your first visit – the town centre is a lovely 15-minute lakeside walk away and home to the medieval Château de Grandson, the second-largest castle in Switzerland. Heading in the other direction, Yverdon-les-Bains (10 minutes' drive/45 minutes' walk) is another lovely town with a castle, the fashion-themed Espace Robert Piguet-Musée suisse de la Mode and the science fiction museum Maison d’Ailleurs as well as the thermal baths that gave the town its name. For other days out, you may like to hit the track at Karting Vuiteboeuf (10 minutes' drive), hike through the Covatannaz Gorges (10 minutes) or go underground at Vallorbe Caves (half an hour). An hour's hike to the top of Le Chasseron (half an hour) gives gorgeous views over the lake; for something more family friendly try the nature trails at Forêvasion (15 minutes), designed by kids for kids.
