Spanish nature hol, anyone? With spectacular reservoir views, a sandy beach… and a Castile and Leon setting among the wildlife haven of the Sierra de la Culebra? Make for Camping Los Molinos. Wildlife – and wolf – spotters will be in their element around here: the 95-kilometre stretch of the Sierra de la Culebra is famed in Europe as one of the last remaining habitats of the Iberian wolf, who roam around this Iberian Peninsula setting of north-western Spain and north-eastern Portugal. Montesinho Natural Park, within the mountain range and over the border in Portugal, is home too to roe and red deer, wild boar, foxes, otters and Iberian lynxes; in the other direction, birdwatching is at the wetlands around Vinhais an hour’s drive away. The site is in the Zamora Province, by the Tera river and close to the clear waters of Valparaiso reservoir which can be seen from the Molinos grounds. It has direct access to a small beach for sunbathing, kayaking, swimming and fishing… if this sounds a tad too energetic, claim a spot on the bar-restaurant terrace for beach views. There’s an indoor dining room at the restaurant too, as well as a big woodburning barbecue grilling fresh local meat.

Liked: Lake setting attractive and washing facilities clean.

Disliked: Rather unfriendly scruffy camp so disappointing. Management seem disinterested and whole place needs far more care and attention. Great potential missed

Liked: Lovely location by a tranquil river. Spacious pitches and quiet rural atmosphere.

Disliked: Part time reception and problematic wifi. No chemical disposal or external fresh water tap.

Liked: We only stayed 2 nights in our motorhome. It’s a beautiful location especially if you like water activities. There is a nice little beach area if you just want to chill out. Surrounded by woodland if you like walking and exploring. The pitches are level and of a decent size and the staff friendly and helpful. Facilities are clean and tidy. We had burgers in the restaurant which were delicious. Would definitely stay here again

Disliked: No shop on site so make sure you have stocked up on supplies before you arrive as nearest shop is 9km away with very limited stock

Liked: Está junto la playa nos gusto la ubicación y las vistas, usamos parcela para tienda y no tuvimos inconveniente en éste

Disliked: Los baños tenían un olor desagradable desde la entrada, las duchas tenían orina en el suelo, desagradable, poca higiene En el bar-restaurante un camarero (personal empleo) fue muy maleducado solo por preguntarse si había posibilidad de cenar, llegamos un poco justos de tiempo y con una respuesta simple de ‘no hay cena ‘ era suficiente, pero sin embargo nos habló muy mal sin motivo alguno, solo por preguntar. si no te gusta atender no trabajes cara al público y hay maneras. La chica de la recepción muy amable.

Liked: La ubicación con la playa al lado

Disliked: El ruido que había por las noches a partir de las 23h. En otros campings se respeta mucho el silencio a partir de esa hora y en este los días que estuvimos no fue así.

Liked: El trato del personal del camping. El entorno natural. La tranquilidad. La limpieza.

Disliked: Quizá faltaba algo de capacidad para atender muchos clientes en el restaurante. Siempre había que reservar para las comidas y cenas.

Liked: Camping con instalaciones amplias, limpias y bien cuidadas. Parcelas amplias y bien delimitadas. Personal atento . Vistas espectaculares al embalse y una calma absoluta. Tiene pedales y piraguas de alquiler a muy bajo precio. Camping para relajarse en medio de la naturaleza.

Disliked: No hay tienda y para ir al supermercado...20 minutos.

Local attractions

Delve into more local cuisine by buzzing along to the honey centre in Sagallos (five minutes’ drive), or dig some ancient history with a subterranean adventure to see the rock paintings at Linarejos 20 minutes from the site. Architecture aficionados should like the old buildings and ‘hell’s bridge’ at Santa Cruz de los Cuérragos, 25 minutes’ drive east; the same distance to the west, the ancient town of Puebla de Sanabria, one of the oldest in the province, has a fort and a 16th-century castle to potter around, as well as a 13th-century church and the 16th-century town hall. Just west of Puebla de Sanabria, Sanabria Lake 40 minutes from Camping Los Molinos is worth a look: it’s the biggest glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula and is surrounded by the Sanabria Lake Natural Park. Wildlife thrives in these parts too; drop into the interpretation centre at San Martín de Castañeda for info, set in an old monastery building once owned by medieval Cistercians. Wolf-spotting tours can be booked in Villafafila, an hour and 10 minutes away.
