  • Rural site in the Pyrenees, a kilometre from the town of Bielsa
  • Between two natural parks and half an hour from France
  • Restaurant serving local dishes such as truffle gnocchi and wild boar
You'll be almost a full kilometre up with a stay at Camping Bielsa in Aragon's Huesca province: this peaceful, rural and mountainous site is in the Aragonese Pyrenees at an altitude of 990 metres. As you'd expect, you'll need your hiking boots (essential), mountain bike (desirable) and most hardy attitude (recommended) for the mass of outdoor pursuits around this spectacular setting, and around the surrounding Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park and Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, both within a short drive. Hiking and mountain biking routes lead from the site to start you gently off, but you can also tackle the local via ferrata climbing routes, whizz delightedly along water in a raft, canoe or kayak, or perhaps challenge your adventurous self to an ascent of Monte Perdido, the third highest mountain in the Pyrenees. Skiing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are all available at nearby resorts in the snowy months. Also on your packing checklist should be whatever tickles your fancy for more relaxed times – your tablet, some tomes and a peaceful determination for long leisurely mountain days, perhaps? For this is a place of calm and carefree times, among stunning views and excellent facilities for all types of holiday taste. You could, for example, splash around the outdoor pool or use the outdoor gym if you're still up for being active, or lounge around the TV room or among the roomy grounds if you're not. There's a games room too for moderate challenges, and free wifi so you can sort where in the Pyrenees you'd like to day trip to next. Camping Bielsa also has a fine restaurant, serving up homemade cuisine where seasonal mushrooms and succulent grilled meats take the main place on the menu: think tenderloin and sirloin steak, wild boar or roe lamb stew, alongside other tasty options like Aragon salad, white asparagus, truffle sauce gnocchi and rich vegetable stew. A café is on site too for lighter bites. And finally on your holiday packing list at this tiptop mountain site? You might want to bung in a French phrasebook if you don't parlez le lingo, as this high-up locale is a mere 25 minutes' drive from Aragnouet in the Hautes-Pyrénées, reachable via a tunnel under the mountains connecting Aragnouet to the site's local town of Bielsa.

Local attractions

Mountain biking and hiking routes start from the site, and canyoning, caving, rafting and kayaking are all available for your active self at the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park in under half an hour's drive. More of the adrenalised same is at the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, also a short drive away. If you're around during the snowy months, sort some skiing at the nearby Piau-Engaly resort in the Aure valley, where the skilled can ski along 65 kilometres making up 38 tracks, at an altitude of up to 2,600 metres. Cross-country skiing can be sorted too, about 15 kilometres away. And then might you feel up for that Monte Perdido climb? The third highest mountain in the Pyrenees, at 3355 metres, makes for a mighty challenge for climbers: start the route near the village of Torla in the Ordesa Valley to ascend the Cirque de Soaso and the Refuge of Góriz on the steep climb to the summit. (If you can be puffed, look out for bearded vultures soaring ahead on your way, as the Pyrenees is one of the few places in Europe where these mammoth-sized birds flit.) For easier times, hike or potter around the Bielsa, Barrosa Chistau and Pineta valleys, or drive the half hour or so to the Aragnouet-Bielsa tunnel, for day trips into France.
