  • Privately-owned, family-run park in rural Northern Cape
  • In Kamieskroon, 40 minutes' drive from Namaqua National Park
  • Covered and open-air braai facilities; dogs allowed
Nestled about 90 kilometres inland from the South Atlantic coast in rural Northern Cape, Verbe Caravan Park is a friendly, family-owned park that's within easy reach of Namaqualand's many natural wonders. The park is located on the edge of the small town of Kamieskroon and is surrounded by mountains, with views over towards Sneeukop in the north, Boesmankop in the west and Kardouw in the east. The grounds are well-maintained and dotted with trees, and there's a colourful garden area around reception showcasing several of the different local flowers. In terms of facilities, there's a spotless amenities block with well-maintained toilets and showers, as well as a communal camp kitchen, washing machine access and open-air or covered braai facilities for alfresco dinners with family and friends. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at Verbe Caravan Park throughout the season. Within about a 10-minute walk, you can visit the Kuiervreugde coffee shop, a small café and restaurant serving wholesome cooked meals and excellent coffee that's heartily recommended by your hosts. There's also a shop attached to the coffee shop, where you can find wooden toys, traditional gifts and other knick-knacks to take home as souvenirs.

Local attractions

There's plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. Hire a guide in Kamieskroon and set out along uncharted trails across the veld, or head south to Kharkams (20 minutes' drive) in the spring flower season to see the fantastic flora. Mountain biking is another top option too and is very popular in nearby areas such as Leliefontein (30 minutes) and Klein Nourivier (40 minutes), where plenty of tracks are available. Driving towards the west will bring you to the edge of Namaqua National Park within about three quarters of an hour. A circular drive and marked hiking trails offer an introduction to this 103,000-hectare park, and there are plenty of local guides available if you want to explore beyond the main tourist areas too. Finally, if you don't mind driving slightly farther afield, you can reach the South Atlantic coast in roughly an hour and a half by road. The nearest beach is at Hondeklip, where you can explore the remains of a shipwreck and a lighthouse while watching the waves roll in.
