  • Scenic site in the Great Karoo region’s Nuweveld Mountain escarpment
  • A 35-minute drive from Leeu-Gamka and an hour from Beaufort West
  • Outdoor pool and braai facilities; hiking, cycling and 4x4 tours
If wide-open spaces are exactly your sort of scenery, book a break at Rooiheuwel Holiday Farm amid the vast, stunning landscape of the Western Cape’s semi-desert Great Karoo region. Stunning really does mean stunning here… This park is in the spectacular Nuweveld Mountain escarpment, surrounded by valleys, kloofs, plains and rivers, in a rural area about 35 minutes’ drive from Leeu-Gamka and an hour from Beaufort West. It’s also a sought-after spot for its authentically South African vibe: head here to experience real Karoo farm life while unwinding in the gardens or by the outdoor swimming pool in a space that’s safe enough to let the kids play until late. While any small adventurers you’re travelling with are exploring the grounds, fire up the braai and load it with the sausages, skilpadjies, whole ribs and cleaned lamb tripe available in the barbecue packs bought from the farm. The farm's also stuffed full of other delicacies, including biltong, dried sausage and chilli bites – excellent as snacks to stuff in your rucksack for adventures. Chat with park staff about all the activities up for grabs in the area – take your pick from horse riding, mountain biking and 4x4 tours. Treks are also to be had on a network of trails ranging from day-long circular hikes to a path that takes a full week to complete. Whether you stay at the park in the evenings or are off in the surrounds on one of the organised overnight trips, make sure to peer up at the stars – they tend to put on a real show overhead in this area of low light pollution.

Local attractions

The Karoo is a semi-desert region – one of the world’s most distinctive dry areas – and is dotted with the planet’s largest variety of succulent plants. It’s also home to plenty of primates, game, reptiles, invertebrates and birds, including the black rhinos and lions in the Karoo National Park (50 minutes’ drive). Once you’ve spotted all the animals on safari here, venture towards Beaufort West, a town full of restored old houses, to drop by the Chris Barnard Museum and the Old Village Museum at Spinwiel Antique Shop for learning a little more about the local history. Rooiheuwel Holiday Farm is also a five-hour drive east of Cape Town, so it’s a fab spot for a few days’ rest during a road trip along the N1 highway running through South African cities like Bloemfontein, Johannesburg and Pretoria before finishing up at Beit Bridge on the border with Zimbabwe.
