  • Peaceful site in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Meander
  • Waterfront location, with kayaking, fishing and swimming in the lake
  • Communal barbecue area, playground and outdoor swimming pool
Heading to the stunning rivers, lakes and luscious green landscapes of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and looking for accommodation in keeping with the gorgeous surroundings? Plonk yourself down beside the water for a peaceful stay in the heart of it all at Glensheiling Caravan Park in Nottingham Road. The quiet site is well-placed for ambles through the indigenous bush and forests, with spectacular views and abundant birdlife to spot, as well as buck, bushpigs and porcupines (rumour has it a leopard was once seen too). Post-outings, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy on site. Fishing is a wise choice, given that the pretty reservoir is packed with bass, or you can jump in a kayak to paddle your way around. You might also elect simply to take a dip in the water to cool off, although there’s also an outdoor pool for folk that prefer to swim without the resident fish. With such scenic surrounds you might choose to just chuck down a blanket and chill out, or take it easy on the ‘deck on the dam’ – a particularly choice spot by the water. Also on site are a play area, trampoline, zipline and pony rides for kids, and chances for groups to get competitive with games of chess (on the giant chessboard outside) pool, table tennis and croquet. Decent barbecue spreads can be rustled up in the communal braai areas, and there’s a washing-up area to deal with the aftermath. The site also has toilet and shower facilities with hot and cold water.

Local attractions

Glensheiling is in the midst of the Midlands Meander, an 80-kilometre network of sightseeing, arts and crafts, activities and restaurant stops winding through the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands – so there’s plenty to do. Energetic sorts can access scenic mountain bike trails, horse riding, tennis, bowls and golf within 10 kilometres of the site. Visit the nearby Nottingham Road Brewing Company (half an hour walk or five-minute drive) to sip beers with whacky names like Tipsy Tiger, Tiddly Toad, Wobbling Wombat and Pickled Pig. Or, if cheese is more to your taste, sample the offering at Swissland Cheese (a 20-minute drive). Monkey around on the Karkloof Canopy Tour (45 minutes), where you’ll zipline around the Karkloof Forest Reserve, spotting a waterfall, forest streams and the Karkloof valley along the way. A couple of other nature reserves to explore are at Giants Castle Game Reserve and Kamberg Nature Reserve (an hour) – where it’s possible to see some ancient rock art, the Kamberg Rock Art. The impressive Howick Falls waterfall (35 minutes) is a must-see and, for a bit of history, there’s a museum and sculpture at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site (35 minutes).
