  • Peaceful bush resort half an hour's drive from KwaDukuza/Stanger
  • An hour's drive from game reserves and half an hour from Dolphin Coast
  • Great spot for birdwatching and fishing in the Mvoti river
Fancy a break in the bush? With splendid scenic views and plenty of facilities for a comfy stay? Then make tracks inland for half an hour from KwaDukuza/Stanger to get to the peaceful Wellvale Resort. This is a particularly fine place to be if you’re into birdwatching, as well over a hundred different species have been spotted passing by here in recent years. There are also walking and mountain bike trails for those who’d like to get out for rural views and glimpses into farming life, and the Mvoti river passes right next to the site for fishing, swimming or riverside relaxing. Cooling dips can also be had at the open-air swimming pool, and there’s a playground for the amusement of smaller guests. As with most of South Africa, barbecues are positively encouraged, although there’s also a communal kitchen if you prefer to prep your dinner under cover. If you’re tempted to venture beyond this peaceful place, it’s around half an hour's drive to the splendid beaches of the Dolphin Coast or an hour to hit some of the nearby nature reserves for game spotting.

Local attractions

If you fancy getting active, several walking trails run in and around the resort, or you can hire mountain bikes to venture a little further into the hills. Golfers are well supplied with places to swing a club, as there are four courses within a 45-minute drive. Other ways to get out and about include horse riding, quad biking and microlight flying, all of which are within an hour’s drive. The Dolphin Coast, half an hour’s drive away, is a mighty scenic stretch with some fab beaches. The nearest, Blythedale beach, has safe swimming and some good surf waves; take your binoculars if you’re heading to Ballito, a little further along the coast, as dolphins can often be spotted close to shore here. You’ll be needing those binoculars again to scan the scenery for wildlife at the area’s nature reserves – it’s around an hour's drive to Harold Johnson Nature Reserve or Amatikulu Nature Reserve to drive, canoe or cycle around the parks in search of zebra, giraffes and antelopes.
