It's free, quick and easy!
- Bush camp on a family farm an hour's drive from Joubertina
- In the Baviaanskloof nature reserve for hikes, climbing and fishing
- Outdoor swimming pool, playground and communal braai areas
As places to settle go, Kouga Wilderness is clearly something pretty special: the Ferreira family set up here on their Eastern Cape farm, about 40 minutes' drive from Joubertina, all the way back in 1815 – and they haven’t budged since.
These days, the family farms sheep and apricots and harvests honeybush tea; you’re welcome to peer over their shoulders at the farming practices as they work – it’s particularly interesting from December to mid-February while harvesting and sun-drying are in progress.
And there’s plenty more to see and do in the stunning surrounds: the farm is part of the Baviaanskloof nature reserve, with a backdrop of the Kouga mountains and several streams and rivers running nearby for swims and fishing (dangle a rod into the Kouga river for black bass, or look out for rare redwing fish in the mountain streams). Hiking/mountain bike trails and rock climbing routes (bring your own kit) are close by, and the folk at the farm can take you out for a scenic drive or point you towards four wheel drive trails if you’re feeling adventurous.
Back at base there’s a playground and a splash pool to cool off in, and plenty of space to sit quietly and observe the local bird life (fish eagles among them). Braai areas are provided, either out in the open or under cover; you’ll need to take a jaunt to Joubertina for your edibles so it's a good idea to come well stocked with supplies to stash in the kitchen's fridge or freezer.

Local attractions
Clearly you’ll be wanting to spend much of your time here exploring your immediate surrounds, but when it’s time for a change of scenery, you may like to set forth for the coast and a day on the sandy beach at Eersterivierstrand (an hour and a half’s drive).
Need more adventure in your life? This stretch of coast is well supplied with adrenaline activities: Tsitsikamma National Park (an hour and a half) is a hub for ziplining, tubing, abseiling and canopy tours through the ancient rainforest – where some of the trees are around 700 years old.
Still craving more? The highest commercial bungee jump in the world is an hour and 45 minutes’ drive away at Bloukrans Bridge.
Those who’d prefer to keep their feet firmly down at ground level should steer instead to the shaded tree-lined paths of Skrijwershoek Arboretum (45 minutes) or get close up to the rescue animals at the Tsitsikamma Wolf Sanctuary (an hour and 20 minutes).
