  • Tree-lined site a short stroll from the Vilar Dam reservoir’s banks
  • A 15-minute drive to Moimenta da Beira and an hour to Serra da Estrela
  • Bar, tennis, swimming pool, play area, paintballing and fishing
Park yourself for some peaceful time in northern Portugal at Parque de Campismo Barragem do Vilar right by the Vilar Dam – a reservoir connected to a tributary of the mighty Douro River – and get ready for days spent fishing, taking dips or lying back with a book on the banks… A trip to this top site is also all about swimming in the outdoor pool, unwinding among the trees with wildlife all around, mingling with other guests at the bar and sampling topnotch Portuguese fodder; the park aims to serve seasonal produce from local farms to give you a flavour of the Moimenta da Beira region. Restaurants are also beside the water (less than a five-minute walk from the site) for dinner with a view and barbecues are permitted back at the park if you’ll be grilling up grub for your travel clan. Ingredients can be found in the supermarkets at the town of Moimenta da Beira a 15-minute drive away (make sure to add a couple of bottles of port made from Douro region grapes to your shopping list as well…) and keep your haul cool using the park’s ice pack freezing facilities. If you’re on hol with a big group or have made enough mates at this friendly site, gather a few together (10 people or more) for organised games of paintball at the sports centre’s obstacle course; those travelling in a couple are sorted for social activities too as matches on the tennis court are available. Parque de Campismo Barragem do Vilar also has facilities including showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a launderette. Amenities are accessible for people with disabilities and a 24-hour security service includes a manned entrance and exit.

Local attractions

A stay at this site is centred on wandering around the reservoir, having a go at watersports or resting in the green surrounds but there are a few sights to see in the area too… For culture, you can head to the typically Portuguese Manor of the Noronhas estate under 15 minutes’ drive away at the bottom of the reservoir or get in a bit of urban exploring at the abandoned convent Mosteiro de Nossa Sra da Assunção de Tabosa (20 minutes). To hike instead, the northern edges of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park are an hour’s drive. Make your way here to amble around 101,000 hectares of protected space – perhaps to Portugal’s highest point if all that relaxing at Parque de Campismo Barragem do Vilar has you itching for a challenging trek…
