  • Outdoor kitchens, film and reading rooms, massages and trips arranged
Lucky enough to be doing a little touring around New Zealand? Boost your good fortune even more with a stay at this stellar site just outside the entrance to scenic Abel Tasman National Park. Sitting at the bottom of the area’s lush foothills, it’s in a top position for strolling on stunning beaches or relaxing in a hammock with a view out over Tasman Bay and Fisherman Island. As any kids in tow might already have gathered by having a look at the pics, amenities at The Barn Backpackers and Campground are swish. The site has a fab setup, with outdoor decking, loads of BBQ areas and seating all around as well as indoor movie and reading rooms. Open-air showers with sea views are also a winning bonus… If you're planning a particularly hardy paddleboarding session on nearby beaches, a yoga practice is just down the road and massages are available on site to get you feeling limber afterwards. Check in with staff about other stuff to do in the local area too – they can sort you out with water taxis, kayaking and sailing trips in Abel Tasman as well as guided walking tours, canyoning trips and caving expeditions. For DIY explores, the site is a 20-minute walk from Marahau beach for swimming in the clear waters or hunting for shellfish and cockles on the shore to chuck on the barbie later. Other eats can be sorted in the village as well – food trucks and restaurants with sea views are set up here, with produce available in Abel Tasman’s general store to sizzle up in one of the site’s three outdoor kitchens.

Local attractions

Once you’ve kayaked alongside orcas and stingrays off the beaches, turn your attention to leg-stretching activities: two of the site’s boundaries are shared with the national park, with the Abel Tasman Coast Track minutes away on foot leading towards Wainui in the north. Venture into the valley through the foothills for epic views, looking out for weirdly named wildlife like weka, pukeko and tui as well as fantails and morepork enroute. On your tramps through Abel Tasman, you could also stop by the Separation Point headland for a gander at fur seals or go forth to the Tonga Island Marine Reserve to ooh and ahh over little blue penguins and bottlenose dolphins... Thrills more your thing? Scuba, skydive and mountain bike in this hub of adventure.
