- Family site with views of Mount Fyffe at an Irish hotel near Kaikoura
- Top spot for seal watching, whale spotting or dolphin swims
- Bar and restaurant on site with Irish music and open fires
Among Ireland’s greatest exports are its people, its culture and the Irish bar – in New Zealand, thousands of kilometres away from the land of a thousand welcomes, Donegal House Irish Hotel (a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the South Island coastal town of Kaikoura) is ticking the boxes and serving up a taste of the Emerald Isle.
Donegal House is well placed for explorations of this part of Canterbury: head into the mountains along the Fyffe Palmer Mountain Track or the Ohau Stream Walkway and Waterfall, both within 25 minutes of the site, or follow the Kaikoura peninsula walk from the town centre to Point Kean's seal colony.
If you’d prefer less of a trek, you’re half an hour’s walk from five kilometres of shingle beach along the New Zealand coast, and there are some prime spots along the seafront for fishing and, further along the coast, surfing.
Once your tired little legs start crying out for a rest, head back to Donegal House for a (hopefully not limping) turn around the 2.4 hectares of lawns, gardens and lakes before turning your attention to your stomach – nab a table in the bar-restaurant for a slap-up meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner served), then put your feet up next to one of the open fires while you let the Irish music wash over you, sipping a drink of something warming. Sláinte!

Local attractions
You won’t have to go far from Donegal House Irish Hotel to get a taste of life in this part of New Zealand: poke around the colonial cottage of Fyffe House, explore the Lavendyl Lavender Farm, visit the Kaikoura Museum for marine fossils and Maori artefacts, or tick off a stereotype with a visit to the Point Sheep Shearing Show.
Kaikoura is a must-visit for anyone who wants to get up close with the animals. Within 15 minutes’ drive of Donegal House, you can swim with seals and dolphins, try whale spotting (by boat or plane), go for a ride on a llama, and meet sharks and seahorses at the Kaikoura Marine Aquarium touch tank.
Have something more cinematic in mind? Tolkienites will have to undergo a trek not unlike Frodo’s to see the spectacular Lord of the Rings locations on the South Island, though the jaunts are certainly worth it. Start three and a half hours away in Nelson Tasman where you can visit the workshop of Jens Hansen, the designer behind the movies’ central piece of jewellery, then keep heading south through Takaka Hill (where Strider first helped the hobbits evade the Black Riders) and take a helicopter over Mount Olympus, Mount Owen and Mount Sunday, which also served as backdrops to the action.
