On a scale of one to 10, the location of EuroParcs Buitenhuizen might inch close to 11, with both the coast and the attractions of Amsterdam within a half-hour drive. And if that wasn’t enough to commend it, this family-friendly holiday park is surrounded by the leafy wetlands of Spaarnwoude Park.
Modern cottages here have airy bedrooms and living areas, well-equipped kitchens and a patio for alfresco meals or wine sipping. Let the kids do their own thing – whether it be bouncing on the trampoline in the playground, playing a game of table tennis or taking part in the organised activity programme (summer only) – and activate your own holiday mode by swimming a few laps in the heated outdoor pool or relaxing in the wellness area (there is an additional fee for the sauna).
You can also hire bikes on site to explore Spaarnwoude Park, keeping an eye out for butterflies, birds and grazing ponies as you go. If you prefer a different set of wheels, there’s a tarmacked skating route, or you can hire a pedal boat at the De Watergeus lake. Packed your golf clubs? There are three championship courses at Golf Club Spaarnwoude (five minutes’ drive), so you can use your holiday to perfect your swing.
The site is no slouch when it comes to amenities, either, with a shop for provisions, a cosy restaurant and a launderette also on site.

Local attractions
Beach babies make a beeline for the coast and vast sandy stretches like IJmuiden (20 minutes’ drive) and Wijk aan Zee (25 minutes). The North Sea breezes blow fairly constant here, making these places popular among wind- and kitesurfers. Unfurl your towel and watch the experts as they navigate the waves, or hit one of the local surf schools to have a go on a board yourself.
You might also like to spend a day in the capital Amsterdam (30 minutes’ drive, 40 minutes by train), where you can cycle along leafy canals, admire works by the Old Masters at the Rijksmuseum or have a moment of reflection at Anne Frank House. Alternatively, head to Haarlem (20 minutes), where you can wander through cobblestone streets and visit colourful tulip fields on the outskirts of the city.
A large collection of 18th- and 19th-century windmills and green houses recreates Holland’s classic landscape at the Zaanse Schans district in the town of Zaandam (25 minutes).
