On for some Gelderland R&R? You’ll get that in bundles at Heidepark Veluwschkarakter, a peaceful holiday park sheltered by mature trees and surrounded by the heath, dunes and forest of the Veluwe. This laidback site on the outskirts of Vierhouten village has spacious grass pitches with plenty of room to spread out and put your feet up with a good book.
Talking of books, make a beeline for reception to pick up a new novel from the library, and while you’re there, hire cycles, tandems and e-bikes for gentle family jaunts across the Veluwe dunes and moorland. Prefer to explore on foot? There are also numerous walks starting straight from the pitches that are suitable for families with young kids (and your dogs too, of course).
If leisurely days reading that book are what you’re after, your offspring can let off steam at the playground, leap about on the air trampoline and run around in safety on the heathland just behind the park. When you’re so chilled that rustling up a barbecue seems like hard work, pick up takeaways in foodie hub Vierhouten – but be warned, you might get sneakily sidetracked into ice-cream shops and pancake houses by the kids.
And on the practical side of things, the park has two modern shower blocks with washing-up sinks and a launderette – tokens are available at reception.

Liked: Lovely area, clean showers and toilets. Great for an overnight stop.
Disliked: Could have been more for the children to do, didn't effect us for 1 night but would put me off returning for longer!

Local attractions
A myriad of cycling and walking options await throughout the Veluwe region, and you might also like to have a wander through heathland and sand dunes in De Hoge Veluwe National Park (45 minutes’ drive), keeping an eye out for rare mouflon sheep and herds of shy red deer.
There are many options for fun-filled family days out. Kids usually adore the cheeky monkeys and silverback gorillas at the Apenheul (25 minutes), or watching walruses, sea lions and dolphins frolic at the Dolfinarium (half an hour). Completing a trio of animal-themed activities is Ermelo Sheepfold (20 minutes), where you can watch shepherds and their dogs round up the sheep and the kid can cuddle lambs in spring.
If more high-octane outdoor action is required, take up the challenge on the high ropes at Klimbos Apeldoorn (25 minutes). Otherwise, you have many watersports opportunities on the Veluwemeer (20 minutes), where you can hire dinghies and motorboats to navigate the waterways, or try mastering windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking on the calm waters of the lake.
