  • Quiet site between the Enghuizen estate and the village of Hummelo
  • Close to canoe trips on the river IJssel and plenty of cycle routes
  • Playground, sports field, campfire area, bike hire and free wifi
There is, of course, cycling of all sorts around this Netherlands site. And there are, but of course, bikes galore here for guests to rent, covering cycles of all sizes as well as e-bikes for the less mobile or more inclined towards idling while on hol. Get on your bike to pedal around the Gelderland surroundings of this peaceful place, along the trails of the Enghuizen estate half a kilometre away, or to local attractions and adventures such as the trampoline park and high ropes course a few kilometres away, or the theme park Land of Punch, within 10 kilometres on a mainly flat route. The site is also close to the IJssel river, for canoe trips or wanders along the riverbank, and is three kilometres from both indoor and outdoor pools open to the public. Arnhem is 35 kilometres or under 40 minutes' drive away. Camping Jena is a quiet site between the forest and the village of Hummelo, about 10 minutes' drive from Doetinchem. It has spacious grass pitches, on a camping field edged with trees, with plenty of room between pitches and a playground for the kids to run around at. There's a sports field to let off steam at too, and a campfire area to settle down around on summer nights: ghost stories optional… Order fresh sandwiches in high season, have coffee and apple pie, or bag a local ice cream at reception, where you can also pick up essentials at the small shop. The site has a communal shed to retreat to too on drizzly days, or to rent out for parties or barbecues; ask for details when you arrive. Market days are Tuesday and Saturday in the local shopping town of Doetinchem.

Local attractions

You can ditch the car here if you so wish, setting out on foot or by pedal along the walking and cycling trails of the Enghuizen estate edging the site, or by taking a canoe out on the IJssel over to Doetinchem or Doesburg. An adventure centre with trampoline park, high ropes course and indoor swimming pool is three kilometres away, as is a heated outdoor pool at Hessenbad. Hit the right note with the kids by arranging a day at the theme park Land of Punch, reachable by bike about 10 kilometres from the site. (Tandem bikes are available to rent if you think your littlies might need some assistance with their pedalling; if you do decide to drive, the theme park is about 20 minutes along the N317.) As you might have cannily figured out, this is a park dedicated to the amusements of Punch and Judy: on offer for your under-eights are puppet shows (natch), indoor and outdoor playgrounds, a castle with theatre, a miniature train, a rope bridge and a maze. Retrieving the car for day trips, it's about 35 minutes' drive to the wildlife park and 19th-century English gardens of Anholter Schweiz, and an hour and 15 minutes to the adventure playgrounds and rollercoaster of Speelpark Hoge Boekel adventure park.
