- Bell tent in the grounds of a villa 25 minutes’ drive from Verona
- Terme Di Giunone 10 minutes’ drive; Museo Nicolis half an hour
- Swimming pool and sun loungers; tennis courts; scooter hire
The vast, luxuriant grounds of a country house on the outskirts of Verona (25 minutes’ drive) are the setting for Villa Vitti’s comfortable bell tent. It’s a blissfully peaceful spot to come back to, especially after a day spent battling the hordes of visitors that crowd around Juliet’s balcony for a selfie…
Verona’s tourists will seem a world away as you stretch out on a sun lounger by the swimming pool, taking a dip when it gets too hot (or walking the few steps to the poolside bar to top up your drink). If you’re after a little exercise, the banks of the river Fibbio, which runs through the property, are a cool spot for a stroll; or you can hit the tennis courts.
Arguably the best way to explore the local area is on two wheels, so take advantage of the on-site scooter rental and head to Parco Pontoncello (15 minutes), a protected zone on the river Adige with hares, foxes and dozens of species of birds.
Your tent comes with a real bed (and all bed linen) and electricity. If you happen to be here during a particularly hot spell, it is also possible to have air conditioning inside the tent (for an additional fee). A table and chairs are provided for al fresco meals in the shade of the tall trees, as is a barbecue. There are several supermarkets within a 10-minute drive – and several restaurants, too, should you decide that life’s too short to cook while you’re on holiday.

Local attractions
Terme Di Giunone (10 minutes’ drive) is an aquatic park with multiple pools (including one with artificial waves and a 50-metre olympic basin) and waterslides. Surrounded by ancient trees, two thermal pools fed by natural springs date from the Middle Ages.
The Arena di Verona is a Roman-era amphitheatre in the heart of the city; keep an eye on its calendar of events to catch an opera in this atmospheric setting. Across the river Adige, the Museo Archeologico al Teatro Romano has another (smaller) open-air theatre, while Piazza dei Signori is lined with medieval buildings.
The vintage vehicles at Museo Nicolis (half an hour) ought to keep the petrolhead in your life happy for a few hours. Alfa Romeos, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, some dating as far back as the 1920s, fill the halls here, alongside non-transport items such as retro musical instruments and cameras.
