Picture Italy as a boot, then zoom in on the boot’s heel (also known as the Salento peninsula) – it’s right there, on the eastern (Adriatic) coast, that Area Sosta Camper 2 Palme sits. Just off the SP366 road, which links Otranto (whose historic centre is five minutes’ drive away) to the beach at Torre dell’Orso (10 minutes) and beyond, this dog-friendly site is surrounded by olive groves and fragrant Mediterranean scrub. And the best part? The spectacular Baia dei Turchi beach, with its sweep of fine sand and crystal-clear waters, is just a 10-minute walk away on a level dirt path through a dense pine forest. (Those who are seriously into watersports, and lugging around paddleboards, canoes and other equipment, might prefer to drive the five minutes to the beach instead.) Spacious tree-shaded pitches come with electric and water hook-up points, as well as good drainage. The site also has a well-kept amenities block with toilets and hot showers (including facilities for visitors with limited mobility), as well as a parent-and-baby washroom and a drying room. Guests can prepare their meals at the barbecue area (there’s also a washing-up station) or take advantage of the on-site restaurant, where they might sample freshly caught fish and regional specialities. (By the way, it’s possible to buy extra virgin olive oil and other zero-mile products directly on site.) There’s also a bar with a decked outdoor area where you can sip locally made wines (try a delicious Negroamaro) or a cold beer under straw umbrellas.

Local attractions

Otranto spreads around a sandy bay sheltered by the Molo San Nicola harbour arm, and overlooked by the 15th-century Aragonese Castle, with its thick walls and forbidding towers. Within the walled city, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata is known for its floor mosaic, one of the largest in Europe. Connected by a narrow canal, the two Alimini Lakes (five minutes’ drive, or a 25-minute hike) form a protected nature reserve that’s home to cranes, flamingoes and birds of prey, as well as rare plants and flowers that thrive in this brackish habitat. Lecce (45 minutes) is renowned for its splendid Baroque architecture, which is visible in buildings such as the extravagantly decorated Basilica of the Holy Cross and the Church of Saint Clare. If your architectural tastes run a little earlier, Lecce also has a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre.
