Dreaming of a camping holiday under the warming southern Italian sun, with a sandy beach and lively seaside town close by? Peruse the pics of Agriturismo Fontanelle, in southern Italy’s Salento region, as chances are it’s a good match for you. Set in the grounds of a historic farmhouse, the grass pitches here sit in the shade of the pine trees, which is most welcome on those days when the sun is particularly strong. A path leads directly from the pitches down through the trees and to the Bay of Turks (five minutes’ stroll). And should you tire of the sun and the sand (not likely, is it?), head straight for lovely Otranto (10 minutes’ drive or a bus ride away) for an evening of bar hopping with sea views. The eco-conscious site owners do much to ensure that food kilometres are kept to a minimum: they have their own organic food brand for sale in the shop and café (open in high summer), including such staples as olive oil and tomato purées. You can also nab locally made breads and pastries, wines and cheeses as well as seasonal Fontanelle-grown fruit and veg. And the practicalities? Spacious pitches have electric hook-ups and access to a very smart communal shower block with a clutch of amenities like washing machines (extra charge) and washing-up areas to make life more than comfortable.

Disliked: Al di sotto le aspettative, all’arrivo mi viene assegnata una piazzola per tenda da me prenotata ,con la possibilità della corrente elettrica, ma ahimè era una piazzola adibita per camper, nessuna zona d’ombra, ci saremmo bruciati sotto il sole in poco tempo. Chiedo di essere spostato in una zona dove ci siano tende da campeggio, ma che non c’è elettricità, con la speranza di poter avere più zone d’ombra, ma ahimè i posti i disponibili erano in un terreno sotto qualche albero di ulivo immerso da formiche e lucertole. Bagni con discreta pulizia Un piccolo camioncino all’interno della struttura (altro che un mini market) dove poter acquistare bevande o qualcosa da mangiare, ma con prezzi da bar del centro di Otranto

From the manager: Buongiorno! Grazie per questa recensione, devo dire che non è stato molto carino nei nostri confronti, noi con lei invece sì :) Vi siamo venuti incontro con ogni mezzo possibile. Su pitchup ci sono diverse foto delle piazzole, la piazzola con corrente presenta alberi piccoli. L'abbiamo aiutata a scegliere il posto giusto per lei, compatibilmente con il cambio last minute da zona soleggiata a zona alberata nelle settimane centrali di agosto e nonostante foste arrivati ben prima dell'orario previsto di check in. I posti sotto i pini, solitamente preferiti da chi soggiorna in tenda, erano tutti già occupati e prenotati. Chi va in un agricampeggio dovrebbe essere consapevole di essere in campagna, in piena natura, potendo incontrare degli insetti. Personalmente, ho avuto la sensazione che fosse una delle prime volte in cui facevate campeggio e che la vostra famiglia fosse più abituata a sistemazioni più "confortevoli" come ad esempio un villaggio turistico, dove chiaramente non si paga 40 euro a notte ma il doppio o il triplo. Il nostro spaccio agricolo vende: frutta, verdura, panetteria, rosticceria, latticini, vini, lette, uova, olio d'oliva, passata di pomodoro, bevande fredde e calde, gelati. Di più non è consentito fare all'interno di un agriturismo. Siamo sicuri che non vorrete più tornare qui, ma vi invito a scegliere meglio, in futuro, il tipo di posto in cui volete soggiornare, dato che è evidente che le vostre esigenze siano ben diverse da ciò che in agricampeggio nella natura può offrire.

Liked: Agricampeggio davvero molto grazioso, abbiamo soggiornato per 4 giorni, stiamo stati benissimo, ottimo il collegamento per visitare otranto e soprattutto il mare stupendo della baia dei turchi raggiungibile a 10 minuti scarsi di pineta! Gestore molto gentile, prezzi giusti, e non cari per essere agosto! Una cosa che mi è piaciuta tanto la pulizia dei bagni, ogni giorno erano sempre profumati e puliti. Sicuramente un posto che ritornerei a occhi chiusi.

Disliked: Mancanza di posaceneri per tutto l agricampeggio.

Local attractions

Of course, the soft sands of the Bay of Turks are accessed straight from the campsite, but if you’d like to see more of Salento, several coastal trails lead to the rocky beaches and cliffs of remote Punta Palascia and its landmark lighthouse. Just a bit further down the coast is Porto Badisco (20 minutes’ drive), where an often-deserted sandy beach sits in a rocky inlet with sea grottos to swim into. Another lovely wild spot is Alimini Lakes (20 minutes’ walk), with two lakes that are home to herons and flamingos; it’s popular for wild swimming, forest walks and boat cruises. Otranto (10 minutes’ drive) is the easternmost town in Italy, and surely deserves a visit for its lovely location overlooking the Adriatic Sea, a nose around the Romanesque cathedral and its mosaics and to tour the 15th-century castle in the town’s former defence walls. Alternatively you could avoid all that, and head straight for a beachfront bar to put your feet up in the sun with a glass of chilled white wine.
