The beach towels, books, and card games are packed, and you’re on your way to Peschici, a village with old, white houses scattered over the cliffs, a sandy beach and an old walled town. When you’re on track for Villaggio Turistico Camping Parco degli Ulivi, there’s a peaceful getaway among centuries-old olive trees 250 metres away from the sea to look forward to. A short stroll from Peschici, the 30-hectare site is also a few minutes’ stroll from the beach (which looks rather like Amalfi’s seafront, with its lines of sunloungers underneath a slope with gradually taller old houses and olive trees). The same deckchairs and beach umbrellas line the outdoor swimming pool on site, which has a small waterslide and a shallow area suitable for little kids. It doesn’t matter if you prefer to spend your holidays kicking and batting balls or snacking constantly. The site has both sports fields and restaurants for both kinds of activities. The restaurant and pizzeria can rustle up some epic woodfired pizzas for you. There’s also a snack bar and a market. A shuttle service will whisk you off to the centre of Peschici, but if you’d like to set about exploring Gargano’s lush vegetation, beaches and villages on a bicycle, motorbike or car, there’s also a rental service on site. Set off to Vieste perhaps, half an hour’s drive away, where there are beaches, a museum with marine fossils and a medieval fortress?

Local attractions

Some of those little boats you spot whizzing away into the distance from your deckchair on Peschici beach are steering to the Tremiti Islands from the port in Termoli (an hour and 20 minutes’ drive). Part of the Gargano National Park, these islands are just splendid for a day lounging on beaches or zipping between dive sites. There are a couple of lakes around here for a scenic stroll and wildlife watching activities, including Lake Lesina (an hour) with its big eel population and observation deck and Lago di Varano (45 minutes). In need of a good hike? Rely upon the Riserva naturale della Foresta Umbra (35 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage site with karst land, endangered animals and 15 hiking or mountain biking trails. A couple of pilgrimage sites are within reach – Monte Sant'Angelo (an hour and 15 minutes) and San Giovanni Rotondo (an hour and 25 minutes) – but if you’re keen to stick close to beaches at all times, do so in the seaside resort of Mattinata (an hour and five minutes).
