A private beach, you say? Surely that's the realm of the rich and famous? Not at all – snaffle a spot at Lake Maggiore’s Bosco Village and that’s exactly what you’ll get (and without having to trade in wads of cash – eccellente). Si, this is a splendid spot for beach buffs of all stripes: a short traffic-free footpath leads from the site down to the large private grassy and pebble beach area, with easy access to the lake for swims as well as heaps of space for those who’d prefer to remain reclined for a goodly period of time. Sportive types need only stray a little way from the site for more active times on the lake: Cannobio, a five-minute drive away, is a hub for various watersports, and the Bosco team can hook you up with a partner company for days of scuba diving. Cannobio’s also the place for all sorts of useful bits and bobs, including restaurants, banks and a harbour and bus stop for services to other corners of the lake. Should you not wish to stray that far, the site has a mini market and a spacious bar for your eats and drinks.

Liked: Lovely staff, restaurant quality very good . Views are excellent

Disliked: Getting in and out is not for the faint hearted , also pitches are on a ledge on the side of a cliff . Road below can be noisy

Disliked: This should not be USED for motorhome pitch-up for safety reasons Very narrow steep turn into to site from a very Twisty quiet dangerous road which is on a Clift When on-site you have to park up on the most ridiculous narrow piece of ground up on an embankment Even as a very good driver my husband is, we had to reverse our 7-meter motorhome into a strip of land, we nearly came off the embankment down a 20-foot drop onto the road below I would say it it is THE WORST PLACE we have ever pitched up How this place has gotten permission to be used as a pitch-up for motorhomes must be against safety standards Once we finally parked up, when I opened our door I could actually touch the window of next doors caravan Never again 👍

Liked: Amazing views of the lake. Excellent facilities and restaurant. Free use of the washing machine and dryer.

Disliked: Narrow steep paths leading up to the pitches, but amazing views at the end!

Liked: Amazing view from the terraced pitch. Beautiful private access to the lake. Very clean, new sanitary block with good showers. Free laundry facilities. Really friendly and helpful staff.

Disliked: Difficult to walk to any surrounding amenities due to the road. There is no pedestrian footpath.

Local attractions

If gazing out over the lake has inspired you to get out onto or into the water, take the five-minute drive to Cannobio for sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing, or have a chat with the folks on site for details of preferential rates with a local scuba diving setup. Should you prefer to stick to dry land for a while (but still take in those lovely lake views), the hills around Cannobio have a good network of not too demanding footpaths, along with a cycle path along the side of a river to the bridge and chapel at Orrido di Sant’Anna (also a top spot for a swim on a hot day). It's a drive of around half an hour down to Pallanza, where recommended options include a wander around the Villa Taranto botanic gardens and boarding a boat over to Borromeo Palace on flower-filled Isola Madre.
