The peaks of the Apuan Alps on one side, the Magra river on the other and a stretch of sandy beach a short drive away – Iron Gate Marina 3B certainly has a cast-iron claim to a splendid setting. The La Spezia surrounds may well be pretty special, but so is the park – it stretches out to a full nine hectares, much of it packed with pine trees and poplars, with direct access to the river (and the Mediterranean waters that lie beyond) from its own harbour area. Not in possession of your own boat? No need to be left on the land – you can hire small boats on site for aquatic adventures. If you'd rather cling a little closer to the coast it’s a 10-minute drive to the nearest beach, although you'll not have to navigate the journey for yourself as a free shuttle bus trundles between the site and the sands through the summer. Sticking steadfastly to dry land? Slope off to Sarzana with a 10-minute drive to hit the shops or mosey through the medieval streets. Should you not fancy either outing, you'll not miss out on swims and eats – there’s an outdoor pool and kids' pool on site, along with a mini market and bar/restaurant for easy eats and drinks (and a cash machine to help pay for them). Togs looking a tad tired? Take them to get cleaned up at the launderette or splash out on some new ones at the site's clothing shop.

Liked: Really great all round campsite, can't say anything bad about it. I booked for one night,and then stayed for 5 more. Short drive to miles of beaches,nice pool,restaurant,exceptionally clean toilets and showers,very friendly staff. Best price was through pitchup,will come again if I am down that way again.

Liked: Campeggio fornito di tutti i servizi, con anche un negozietto e un bar. Ottima la piscina e la vicinanza al fiume. Servizi per grandi e piccini, prettamente per famiglie. Comodo sia come posizione che poi come strutturato internamente. Campeggiatori rispettosi e bagni puliti e curati. Anche se siamo state solo per un giorno e mezzo, ci siamo trovate molto bene. Ritorneremo sicuramente! Grazie

Liked: Me gustó todo de este camping y volvería sin ninguna duda. Desde el trato en recepción, como todas las instalaciones y servicios que ofrecen. Tienen bar, restaurante e incluso locales de alquiler de embarcaciones, puesto que está justo al lado de un río navegable. La limpieza es de 10, no hubo ni una sola vez que haya entrado en los baños y no me haya cruzado con alguien limpiando o que los acabaran de limpiar, y eso que hay muchísimos, no tendrás que hacer cola nunca. Incluso en los lavabos, que también son muchos, tienes un espejo y un enchufe en cada uno. A pesar de ser grande, se respetan mucho los momentos de silencio y las parcelas son amplias y cómodas. Las piscinas están genial, muy limpias, con tumbonas suficientes y socorrista durante todo el tiempo de su apertura. Por último, decir que si quieres recorrer la zona o incluso ir a Cinque Terre o Portovenere, tienen servicio de transfer por 5€ por persona ida y vuelta a la estación de Sarzana, aspecto también muy positivo.

Disliked: No hay nada que no me haya gustado.

Liked: J’ai adoré le camping, calme avec pas mal d’activités (restaurant, piscine, etc.) Le camping est grand, les communs sont propres, notre emplacement pour van été super, pas trop collé aux voisins ni en pente. Le seul bémol est qu’on a pas pu partir tôt car il faut payer le séjour à notre départ à 8h minimum.

Local attractions

It’s best to leave both your boat and your car behind for the day if you're planning an outing to the famed Cinque Terre National Park – boats and trains run from La Spezia (half an hour’s drive) to the park, giving you access to the colourful cliffside villages and walking trails without tackling tricky mountain roads. Pretty Portovenere is a good alternative for a day out, but you’ll need your car for this one – it's a 50-minute drive. More walks and outdoorsy activities? Make for the Montemarcello Natural Park, 15 minutes away, for woodland and coastal trails, plus walks around Lerici Castle, Punta Corva black-sand beach and the abandoned village of Barbazzano (all 20 minutes). For more challenging hikes and mountain bike days, the Apuan Alps are about half an hour away by car. Even if you're not planning to scale any mountains, it's worth heading that way anyway to see the stunning marble caves of Carrara (35 minutes). Swing past Sarzana (10 minutes) on the way back to see some of that marble put to good use in the cathedral, before taking a wander around the ancient walls and fortress.

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
