  • Grass pitches in a nature reserve 10 minutes' walk from the lakeshore
  • A 25-minute drive to Viterbo; an hour to Rome
  • Activities organised including canoeing, archery and guided hikes
Head about an hour’s drive north of Rome to the rural landscape of the Cimini mountains, in the province of Viterbo, and a spot that’s surrounded by woodland and full of wildlife. That’s where you’ll find the Lago di Vico nature reserve, and 10 minutes' walk from the lakeshore, Camping Natura. This site is run by a company that wants to encourage guests to immerse themselves completely in nature, and over the years they’ve expanded to be able to offer a wide range of outdoor activities that will help you see the surroundings in whatever manner you choose. That might be canoeing on the lake, mountain bike expeditions (with bike hire and/or guided routes available) or hikes with qualified guides who can tell you all about the area’s environment while also making sure you follow the right route. The activities don’t all take you out and about, either – there’s also the chance to have an archery lesson, a sailing lesson or a free climbing lesson, or have a go at the agility path and the treetop trails. All of this comes together to provide a package that’s likely to give you a real insight into the area, and possibly learn a few things about yourself through the various challenges too… In between such outings (or if you're just looking to relax…), spend some time on site, relaxing at the water’s edge nearby and enjoying local meals or drinks at the on-site bar and restaurant. Lots of handy facilities are provided too, including a playground, a laundry room, a wifi zone and a bathroom block.

Electric optional grass pitch

Local attractions

Which first? An afternoon canoeing or scuba diving in the volcanic Lago di Bracciano (half an hour’s drive)? Imagining you’re the new resident at Villa Farnese (10 minutes), a spectacular hilltop Italian estate? Tracking down Nepi archaeological sites and the Cavaterra waterfall (25 minutes)? Historic places are in plentiful supply… you might want to start by visiting the ancient town of Sutri (15 minutes), which has necropolis tombs, a Roman amphitheatre and views over ravines. Then, work your way out towards the Palazzo dei Papi, cathedral and the archaeological Colle del Duomo museum in Viterbo (25 minutes). The medieval Castello Ruspoli (25 minutes) should feature on your itinerary too, as it has a significant Renaissance garden. It’s not the only place that was conjured during the Renaissance movement. Just a little further is Forte Sangallo (half an hour), a huge Renaissance fortification.
