Local attractions

The ancient Calabrian town of Tropea about 12km from Village Marina del Capo has an illustrious history: it's said to have been founded by Hercules (possibly a porkie) and its waters were the spot where Pompey defeated Octavian after the Second Triumvirate crumbled (certainly true). Have a historical look at its the city's old centre, its Franciscan monastery, its two palaces and its museum; the model railway exhibition is something you might choo-choose to puff along to too. A drive of about 15 kilometres will take you to Capo Vaticano, the cape of grey granite that was once home of writer Giuseppe Berto and that these days is a top Calabrian bathing spot.
