You'll be in a mighty fine setting indeed with a stay at Creta Camping on the Greek island of Crete: there's direct access to a sandy serviced beach, and this peaceful and pretty place is only 20 minutes' drive from the city, port and airport of ancient Heraklion. And even better (at least if you have little adventurers along on your trip), this coastal Crete setting is a teeny drive from CretAquarium and Dinosauria Park, as well as the pools, slides and over 30 water games of Watercity waterpark. For a more peaceful vibe (adventurers of a slightly bigger size might like this one), the Aposelemis canyon is also a few kilometres away. Creta Camping is a seafront site in the resort of Kato Gouves on Crete's northern coast. It's a woodland site too, set among just over two hectares for scenic and shaded pitching up, among sea views and plenty of space. If you're keen to try as much Cretan cuisine as is humanly poss on one hol (recommended), traditional recipes are dished up daily at the site restaurant, where there's also regular entertainment including local music and dancing. And if you're keen to snap boastful pics with which to induce envy in those back home (also recommended, arf), wander along after that to the beach bar, to sup a drink on the sands as the sun goes down. Also on site are a playground, a games room and a shop for foodie and other bits and pieces.

If you are coming on a bus, please get off at bus stop No 9, head to the Aquarium Crete and continue along the promenade. The site is 300 metres after the aquarium.

Local attractions

Hire a bike on site, go for a wander or take to the car for a mere few minutes to access family days close to this spectacular seaside setting. CretAquarium within a couple of minutes' drive has sea critters from around 250 species residing in over 60 tanks; also within a couple of minutes is Dinosauria Park, within looming animatronic dinosaur models along a half-kilometre walk, 5D and 7D cinema screens and an indoor play area. Watercity waterpark is around 15 minutes' drive inland and the island's biggest waterpark Acqua Plus is around the same distance away south of the Aposelemis canyons. Slightly further afield at 20 to 25 minutes' drive is the Lychnostatis Open Air Museum, on Cretan art, history and culture, and the huge ruins of the ancient palace of Knossos (30 minutes), the oldest archaeological site on the island and a definite must-see. At Crete's capital, the Heraklion archaeological and natural history museums are also very much worth a look, and have enough curiosities to entice even the most reluctant of small sorts and waterpark wannabes.
