The Eurocamp Spreewaldtor team are a sensible lot. For as they rightly point out, whether you're a) a total newbie who's never been to Germany's spectacular Spreewald region or b) a considered expert on all things Spreewald, you should certainly book a stay there with some immediacy. If you're a newbie type, this is the place to learn that the Spreewald is a stunning part of Germany in Brandenburg (about 100 kilometres from Berlin) and a UNESCO biosphere reserve made up of lush greenery, forests and wetlands, hundreds of kilometres' worth of rivers, and over 200 small canals. It's home to thousands of animal, bird and plant species, plus island farmsteads, hiking and cycling paths, quiet fishing spots, punting by ferrymen in traditional garb… seriously, sort a stay here. Eurocamp Spreewaldtor is six and half kilometres by car (or three and half by foot) from the blue lake waters of Great Leuthener See, five minutes' drive from Märkische Heide. It's a cinch to get to Berlin from here too, by car in 90 minutes via the A13 or by public transport using the Brandenburg-Berlin-Ticket: the Eurocamp Spreewaldtor shuttle bus can drop you off to the station (as well as zip you about on days out around the region). You'll need some time on site too: there's a 15-metre heated pool open in summer, a paddling pool within easy eyeing distance of the sunbathing area, and – just fab in all seasons – a wellness area with Finnish sauna, steam bath and outdoor area. Completing your most relaxing lineup is a site restaurant serving up traditional cuisine using fresh local produce, and a mini market with camping kit, groceries, newspapers, ice cream and the famed Spreewald gherkins.

Electric grass and gravel pitch (classic)

Electric grass and gravel pitch (classic)

Liked: The campsite was in a beautiful area of nature and had great facilities. The washing machines were really useful and liked the booking process via the app once I got my head around it. The walks in the forest are amazing (take mosquito repellent though). The drinks were cheap and tasty. Pizza at the restaurant was delicious. Showers were lovely, hot and powerful.

Disliked: It could be a bit noisy in the afternoons and evenings. with the music at the main pool area on until 10pm, but it was very peaceful outside of this. We were pitched just behind the restaurant so it may be quieter on other pitches. The main downside was that we couldn’t use the pool or beach area as both were so full of people, it wouldn’t have been a swim, just a stand on the spot in water. But everyone looked like they were having fun so it’s not necessarily a con of the resort, just a personal dislike as we don’t have kids and it was essentially just a kid’s pool. Even the jacuzzi was full of about 7-8 kids and that was at 9pm! So don’t rely on the pool as a key part of your holiday if travelling without children. Would be great if there was an actual convenience shop rather than just a gift/souvenir shop.

Local attractions

Eurocamp Spreewaldtor is 15 minutes' drive from Schlepzig, 20 from Lübben and 35 from Lübbenau. All are worth a potter around, but if you only have time for one local town make it Lübbenau, for a look at the gherkin museum just outside town in Lehde and featuring the Spreewald gherkins famed in the region for centuries. August sees the annual gherkin festival where that year's gherkin queen is crowned. After the museum, stay in Lübbenau a little longer for its other sights, including a castle in a park with orangerie, medieval city walls, and boat rides around the marina. You can also pedal from Lübbenau to local villages; bike hire services are in town. You'll need at least a few days in spectacular Berlin, but top options are its World Heritage Sites such as the sixth-century BC Ishtar Gate, the Reichstag building, Berlin Zoo and green spaces including Görlitzer Park and the botanical gardens.
