  • Alpine site five minutes’ drive from the French Val Cenis ski resort
  • In the spectacularly scenic wildlife haven of Vanoise National Park
  • Bar-restaurant, play area, recreation room and heated ski room
Seeking out a getaway zooming down slopes? Or maybe you’re all about heady hikes and animal encounters… Either way, a stay at Camping Caravaneige de Lanslevillard – a family-friendly site in the Savoie department of Rhône-Alpes – should see you sorted. The region is a popular place for skiing and snow sports in the colder months, with the 43 slopes and 19 lifts of the French Alp’s Val Cenis ski resort only five minutes’ drive away. Making it even more enticing, guests can get kitted out with skis and gear at the outfitters 300 metres from base, and have all that equipment delivered to the heated storage lockers on site. Getting cold feet? Retreat to the site après ski to regain feeling in extremities in the heated ski room, cosy recreation room or toasty bar-restaurant. If that’s not enough reheating, splurge a little with a trip to the spa less than five minutes away for lengthy hot tub soaks, swims in the heated pool and sessions in the sauna. For those not suited to snowy climes, the site’s in the spectacularly scenic Vanoise National Park – France’s first national park – so it’s a top spot for mountainous hiking, adventure sports and wildlife watching during the less bitter months. When venturing out, keep eyes peeled for alpine ibexes, marmots, and birds of prey such as golden eagles and bearded vultures.

Local attractions

Make the most of Alpine getaways by spending as much time as possible in the early days of stays soaking up the gorgeous views from as many spots as possible. Start at Lac du Mont Cenis, 25 minutes’ drive from the site, for scenic walks and bikes during warmer months and dog sled rides during colder. Travel next to the highest paved point of the Alps, Col de l’Iseran, which is a spectacular ride for cyclists and motorbikers (or drivers) – it’s a two and a half hour bike ride away, or a 55-minute drive, and worth every second for the hair pin bends and mountainous views. If hols aren’t complete without a splashing swim (presumably during the warmer days), 30 minutes will bring paddlers to Base de Loisirs Aquatique la Norma where there’s a waterslide, a grass and wood beach, and lots of space to emulate Olympic athletes. When mountain and lake views no longer appeal, leave Vanoise for the cities – it’s about two hours to Grenoble on the French side and Turin on the Italian, and each has museums, palaces, cathedrals and gardens to explore.
