- Site set 1,000 metres above sea level with Mont-Pourri glacier views
- A 10-minute drive to La Plagne-Tarentaise and 20 to Moûtiers
- Hikers’ paradise with access to southern Beaufortain paths close by
Carve yourself out a comfy spot at Camping Pierra-Menta, a homestay-style site a thousand metres above sea level and amped up by stunning views of the Mont-Pourri glacier.
This park, aimed at families holidaying in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is on the edge of the mountainous Vanoise National Park and centrally located between the Tarentaise valley tourist towns of Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Moûtiers (20 minutes’ drive apiece).
All in all, it’s in a nifty spot for exploring Alpine passes – the Col de l'Iseran, the Cormet de Roselend and the Col de Madeleine roads are accessible for panoramas aplenty, as are hikes around the southern slopes of Beaufortain, where the park sits (ask the owner for info on how to reach the top trails).
Not enough of a challenge to get the adrenaline spiking…? Rock climbing, rafting, canoeing and paragliding are also all available to take on; if you fancy peaceful pursuits, the bike path between Aime (30 minutes’ cycle) and Bourg-Saint-Maurice (an hour) is your go-to for gentle rides.
This is a simple site where the focus is on spending time in nature, so facilities have been kept to just the basics such as showers and toilets. The park’s a 10-minute drive from the Savoie village of La Plagne-Tarentaise for rustling up meals with goodies from the supermarkets.

Local attractions
The star attraction when staying at this site is the awe-inspiring nature, with lush hiking trails through the Tarentaise and Maurienne valleys to amble along in summer and ski slopes to slalom down in winter. If you’re here in the warmer months, trek across trails encircled by towering peaks while keeping an eye out for animals like marmots, wolves and badgers; at cooler times, head to Les 3 Vallées skiing area (25 minutes’ drive) to sharpen up your snowsports skills.
But if all that sounds far too active…? Plonk yourself in a car and drive along the Cormet de Roselend road (45 minutes), passing by the turquoise waters of the Lac de Roselend lake, to soak up the surrounding scenery while sitting down. This is also a popular route for mountain biking if you’d prefer to explore it on the saddle.
For your foodie fix, the medieval town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice (20 minutes) is worth moseying towards to try the much-lauded Beaufort cheeses, as is Moûtiers (the same distance) for its impressive cathedral and pretty riverside setting.
Post-exploration, refreshing dips at Lac du Bozon lake, scenically squidged in among the mountains, are an hour away.
