  • Ardèche site less than a kilometre from Vogüé
  • Ardèche river canoeing within a kilometre's walk
  • Snack bar, grocery shop, football field, boules and basketball
An Ardèche river village in splendid surrounds, a 12th-century château, teeny narrow streets, and canoe hire for Ardèche river trips – all under a kilometre from your Rhône-Alpes base. Camping Les Peupliers in the south of the Ardèche region is a simple and short stroll from the fashionable destination of Vogüé, to the south-east of Aubenas and six kilometres from Balazuc. The fably popular Gorges de l'Ardeche and Gorges du Gardon are within 17 kilometres of the village, and the Pont du Arc is within half an hour's drive. Additionally within simple strolling distance of Les Peupliers is a huge miniature golf course, 200 metres away, and canoeing spots 300 and 900 metres away. Sporty stuff on site includes a football field, basketball and volleyball courts, boules and two ping pong tables. Kids' workshops are available in the mornings in July and August. The site also has a snack bar, a grocery shop and summer bread and pastry sales. Shops, a pharmacy and a doctor are all half a kilometre away.

Local attractions

Canyoning, climbing and kayaking are all popular in the area, and you can rent canoes in Vogüé to take out onto the Ardèche (next to the bridge at the entrance to the village). In town, cross the 19th-century bridge and potter around the Place de la Gadabielle, castle, old trade track, mill and ancient wells, all marked on a self-guided Vogüé trail. From here, it's six kilometres to another prettily scenic town in Balazuc, set in a valley above the Ardèche surrounded by cliffs and trees. If you're anywhere within day trip driving distance of it, the huge natural bridge of the Pont d'Arc is a must-see (how fortunate then that it's within 20 minutes' drive). The nearby Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave, with the earliest cave paintings discovered so far in the world, is within easy reach of the Pont d'Arc.
